Robert Pattinson joins the cast of Christopher Nolan's latest mysterious epic

While Quentin Tarantino chatter is dominating Film Twitter today thanks to the first trailer for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, it won't be long before we see more heated (and enormously silly) debates around Christopher Nolan, the internet's other favorite modern director. Nearly two years after experimental World War II epic Dunkirk received a rapturous reception from critics and moviegoers alike, Nolan's next movie is quickly coalescing. Yesterday, Variety revealed that BlacKkKlansman star John David Washington will be the lead in Nolan's new "massive, innovative, action blockbuster," which is currently the only description anyone has of this mysterious project. Of course, if a lead actor has been cast, then several other stars won't be far behind.

But I don't think anyone expected more Nolan breaking news to hit this quickly.

Early this morning, Collider's Jeff Sneider exclusively reported that Robert Pattinson, indie darling and star of the upcoming High Life, will star alongside John David Washington in Christopher Nolan's next film. Collider sheds very little light on what the actual movie is about, but the report confirms that, in addition to Washington and Pattinson as the leads, Nolan is looking to cast "an age-appropriate female lead" and "an older male co-star." Perhaps the most interesting tidbit from the Collider report is Sneider's speculation that Nolan's next film could be a follow-up to Inception, even if it doesn't end up being a direct sequel.

Inception is, without question, one of my favorite films of all time. If it turns out that this is a sequel or even just set in the same universe of dream thieves, you will likely see me overjoyed with excitement. Obviously that might not be the case, but it's still an interesting thought.

Pattinson's upcoming slate is jam-packed with high-profile titles, including the aforementioned High Life, David Michôd's The King, Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse, and Ciro Guerra's Waiting for the Barbarians. In addition, Pattinson is currently filming Antonio Campos' The Devil All the Time, and he's set to shoot a role in Joanna Hogg's sequel to Sundance hit The Souvenir. He's a busy actor, but a role in Nolan's next almost seems like too perfect of a fit. Pattinson has that steely cool, emotionally subdued vibe that Nolan seems to love so much, and I have a feeling the director will know exactly how to get the best performance out of his new star.

I mean, just look at that picture. Pattinson was born to star in a Nolan movie.

The still-untitled event movie will hit theaters on July 17, 2020. I have to assume we'll be hearing more details very, very soon.
