More Christopher Nolan News: 'Widows' star Elizabeth Debicki joins the director's new film

Okay, let me break down exactly what happened.

Yesterday afternoon, I finished writing up my story about Robert Pattinson's casting in the new film from director Christopher Nolan. The Inception and Dunkirk director's latest project has been shrouded in several layers of secrecy, but these are major casting decisions, so they're worth writing up. After a busy morning, I figured that would be the last major news item of the day. Then I saw a tweet from ace Variety scooper Justin Kroll: "Incoming..."

If you follow movie news on a daily basis, you know what that means. Nobody was positive on what the news would be, but after the breaking Collider scoop earlier in the day, I had a feeling it could end up being another big piece of information related to Nolan's latest. My feeling was correct.

Following up the casting of Washington and Pattinson, Variety's Justin Kroll exclusively reported on Wednesday that Widows star Elizabeth Debicki has joined the cast of Christopher Nolan's next film, joining Pattinson and John David Washington. Kroll's latest report provides no additional details on the plot, but it is important to note that production on the IMAX blockbuster is expected to begin "later this year."

Debicki is coming off a huge 2018, where breakout turns in Steve McQueen's Widows and Jennifer Fox's The Tale elevated her to a new level of stardom. After taking on significant roles in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 (and is expected to return for the sequel), Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, and Guy Ritchie's The Man from U.N.C.L.E., a starring role in a Christopher Nolan vehicle could vault Debicki to the A-list for good.

This is a thrilling casting choice, as Debicki practically stole Widows in the middle of a massive ensemble. I imagine she's likely to do the same in Nolan's new film, even though none of us know what it's about. I can't wait, obviously.

The untitled project will arrive on July 17, 2020.
