John David Washington to star in Christopher Nolan's still-untitled event movie

How many directors can generate absurd amounts of excitement just by announcing that they're in the process of making a new movie?

Only Christopher Nolan.

Back in January, Warner Bros. Pictures dated the Inception and Dark Knight's director's next film for July 17, 2020, sending fanboys and Nolanites everywhere into a frenzy. No information was given about the plot, nor did Nolan feel the need to give us a title- only the label of "event movie" was provided. Of course, speculation ran rampant immediately, even though it was abundantly clear that nobody knew anything. Recently, rumors trickled out that Nolan's latest would be a romantic thriller inspired by North by Northwest, though there has been some controversy over the accuracy of those reports. Could be true! But it also could be completely wrong. When a project is so shrouded in secrecy, everyone is left in the dark.

Today, things got a little bit less fuzzy. In a major scoop, Variety's Justin Kroll reported that John David Washington, star of Spike Lee's Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman, will star as the lead in Christopher Nolan's still-untitled event film. Of course, the Variety report provides little additional insight into what's happening behind closed doors- primarily because it seems like nobody is in the know. Kroll notes that, despite the "highly coveted" nature of the role, the film's plot and the number of meetings held between Nolan and possible stars both remain a mystery.

The only description in play right now?

"A massive, innovative, action blockbuster."

It's really hard to judge any of this right now, simply because it's impossible to know what's in store. Regardless of the ultimate nature of the film, Washington is a great choice for the lead. Obviously I don't know what the role entails, but he was absolutely tremendous in Spike Lee's film, and I love the idea of Washington leading a major blockbuster. But seriously, Nolan. Give us some plot details ASAP. Just a logline. Anything at all! I can't wait.

The untitled event film will debut on July 17, 2020. Production can't be far away now.
