Blast from the Past: Return to 1969 in amazing teaser for Quentin Tarantino's 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'

Even though it feels like I say this every year, there is an unusually high number of major movies set to hit theaters in 2019. J.J. Abrams is going to wrap up the latest Star Wars trilogy with Episode IX, which will hopefully serve as a proper send-off for Daisy Ridley's Rey and the rest of the gang. Martin Scorsese is teaming up with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci for The Irishman, a film that will return all four legends to the gangster genre. And of course, there's no theatrical experience this year that I'm anticipating more than Avengers: Endgame, a film destined to send fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe into an enthusiastic frenzy.

However, when I wrote my annual "Most Anticipated" list at the start of the year, none of these films topped the list. That distinction belonged to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the ninth film from perennial Tinseltown provocateur Quentin Tarantino. Since it's announcement, there have been precious few details on the exact plot of the film, beyond that it somehow involves Sharon Tate and the Manson murders. But if the combination of Tarantino, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie in 1969 Hollywood isn't enough to get you excited, I don't know what will.

After a pair of ill-advised poster, Sony released the first teaser for the film this morning- watch it (or rewatch it) below!

"Rick f*cking Dalton!"

I mean, what can I even say? I have watched this trailer well over a dozen times now, and I don't anticipate that I'll be stopping anytime soon. From the performances to the late 1960s vibe, there's so much to love here, and I'm actively looking forward to seeing everyone dissect this thing to pieces over the next few weeks. As expected, the 90-second teaser gives us no concrete plot details, since Tarantino seems hellbent on keeping the whole thing under wraps until the very last minute.

Hey, if you could cut a trailer this spectacular without giving anything away, you'd do it too.

Beyond the central question of how Tarantino will treat the Manson Murders and Sharon Tate (Robbie), this trailer solidified just how thrilling it'll be to see DiCaprio and Pitt team up on screen, spitting out Tarantino's classic dialogue at a mile-a-minute. DiCaprio appears to be channeling a bit of a Kurt Russell (who actually has a supporting role in the movie) or John Wayne vibe as this over-the-hill Western star, while there's just enough Aldo Raine in Pitt's performance here to make me believe he'll fit right into Tarantino's new universe. And with cameo appearances from Bruce Lee and other famous faces, this really does feel like a cinephile's dream.

But in the end, we're all buying a ticket for Tarantino. Even if you weren't a fan of The Hateful Eight or his last few revenge flicks, I have a hard time imagining many film fans aren't thrilled for this one.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood opens in theaters on July 26.
