Anna and Elsa return in teaser trailer for Disney's 'Frozen II'

We're just over five years removed from the release of Disney's Frozen, the film that pretty much changed the landscape of animation for the rest of the decade. Before the grand adventure of Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Idina Menzel), Disney was on the rebound as an animated power, thanks to the success of films like Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph (and also the middling results of Pixar titles like Brave, Cars 2, and Monsters University). But Frozen firmly situated Disney Animation as the preeminent studio of the 2010s, and it gave the Mouse House a new classic on the level of Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin- which naturally means the live-action remake is only a decade away. In worldwide dollars, Frozen is still the highest-grossing animated film in history; it was a cultural phenomenon that may go unmatched for several decades. Unless the sequel tops it.

Just in case you thought Disney wouldn't make enough money this year, Frozen II arrives in November to annihilate more box office records. Yesterday, the first trailer dropped in a surprise release- watch it below!

"From director Christopher Nolan, the story of...."

Get it, because the trailer is needlessly intense? Okay, anyways, if you can get past the fact that Disney seems to be shooting for a dark'n'gritty approach, this looks like an entertaining enough sequel. Directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck seem to be expanding the scope of Arendelle significantly, accompanied by some gorgeous animation and just enough mystery to mobilize the Internet sleuths.

Like many fans, I've had something of a love/hate relationship with Frozen since its release in 2013. When I saw it in theaters that year, I thought it was a revelation- a Disney Princess tale that easily matched its predecessors. As the film became an object of omnipresent cultural fascination and "Let It Go" invaded the airwaves forever, my enthusiasm took a nosedive (though it's hard to say this was the fault of the film itself). So it's hard to say that I'm excited for a sequel that's sure to dominate the cultural conversation throughout late 2019 (until Star Wars IX, of course), but this trailer does a decent job of selling something different. In the past, so many Disney sequels went direct-to-DVD, so it's encouraging that Frozen II has a solid hook for a would-be blockbuster.

Although, let's be honest, having Elsa protect Olaf (Josh Gad) by fighting off flames is kind of absurd.

Frozen II will debut in theaters on November 22. Let the hype begin.
