Oscar Isaac and Zendaya in talks to join super-sized cast of Denis Villeneuve's 'Dune'

Though the chances of mainstream success feel shaky at this point, Denis Villeneuve's Dune is almost destined to be one of the most talked-about blockbusters of the next 24 months. Presuming the French-Canadian auteur gets his blockbuster sci-fi adaptation in theaters by the end of 2020, the film will likely top most-anticipated lists, generate intense debate in fan communities, and send Film Twitter into disarray by the time all is said and done. Since it was revealed that the filmmaker behind Blade Runner 2049 would take on an adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel (which was infamously adapted once by David Lynch), there has been a steady news cycle around the film, almost all of it pointing to something incredibly thrilling. Call Me By Your Name wunderkind Timothée Chalamet is on board to play the heroic Paul Atreides, and he'll be working alongside Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, and Dave Bautista. And if this week's reports pan out, the cast is only getting better from here.

On Tuesday, it was revealed by multiple sources that Oscar Isaac is in talks to join the film as Duke Leto Atreides, Paul's father. Naturally, this pretty much prompted an explosion of excitement on Film Twitter. Deadline reported that Isaac's deal isn't closed yet, but if it goes through, it'll represent another great addition to the cast and another interesting team-up between director and star. As a fan of virtually anything Isaac does, I couldn't be more excited to see him join another high profile sci-fi project.

But wait, there's more! Collider's Jeff Sneider reported earlier today that Zendaya, star of Marvel's upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home and the Hugh Jackman-led Greatest Showman, is likely to star in Dune as Chani, the love interest of Chalamet's Atreides. Collider's report doesn't mention whether or not the actress is currently in talks for the part, only that she's "being eyed" by the studio for the role. Sneider also notes that Zendaya's character would likely take on a greater role in the sequel, should Villeneuve's plan to shoot two Dune films back-to-back ultimately pan out.

This cast just keeps getting bigger and bigger, and I'm sure we'll hear even more by the time cameras are rolling. For now, might as well sit back and get ready- it looks like a truly spectacular sci-fi epic is in the works.
