Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly reunite as world famous detectives in first trailer for 'Holmes & Watson'

Have you noticed that it's going to be a very busy holiday season at the box office?

Okay, so I'll be delving into this more in my upcoming article on the Dark Phoenix trailer and Fox's calendar shifts, but let's break this down real quick. On December 14, four new films enter wide release- Universal's Mortal Engines, Sony's Lord and Miller-produced Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Clint Eastwood's The Mule, and the Jennifer Lopez-led Second Act. Five days later, Disney will debut Mary Poppins Returns, which is arguably the biggest film of the season. But wait, there's more! On December 21, James Wan's Aquaman, Travis Knight's Bumblebee, Robert Zemeckis' Welcome to Marwen, and an untitled Deadpool movie join the fight, followed by Adam McKay's Vice and Mimi Lader's On the Basis of Sex on Christmas Day. Oh, and a deluge of expansion titles vying for Oscar season glory. Shouldn't be busy at all.

In addition to all of that, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are set to reunite a decade after Step Brothers for what promises to be the comedy event of the season: Holmes & Watson. After a lengthy wait, Sony released the first trailer yesterday- watch it below!

I swear, this movie only exists so someone can say "No sh*t, Sherlock!" in an actual Sherlock Holmes movie. Anyhow, this looks very stupid and I'm totally here for it. I don't think I've ever actually watched Step Brothers from start to finish, but I've seen so much of it on Comedy Central over the years that I can probably quote a dozen lines. Can't say that for many movies. The Adam McKay-directed buddy comedy has been unexpectedly canonized in modern film discourse, so you can expect a good bit of excitement for Ferrell and Reilly's reunion here (we'll see if having Etan Cohen as the writer/director changes the dynamic at all).

I love how they're committing to the silliness of the concept, even adopting some wonderfully absurd British accents just for kicks. There are a few jokes that seem like low-hanging fruit, but there are just as many that made me laugh out loud. Plus, the supporting cast includes Ralph Fiennes, Steve Coogan, Rebecca Hall, Kelly MacDonald, and Hugh Laurie. This has to be at least decent, right?

Holmes & Watson will arrive in theaters on December 21. We'll see if it can stand out amid the onslaught of Christmas fare.
