Watch: Dan Stevens infiltrates a cult in first trailer for 'Apostle' from 'Raid' director Gareth Evans

If you have a Netflix subscription, it's time to get ready for an onslaught of original movies from acclaimed directors. Starting with Jeremy Saulnier's Hold the Dark on September 28, the streaming giant will release everything from highly anticipated genre flicks to major awards contenders over the span of a thrilling couple of months. Over the last few weeks, we've been treated to new looks at many of these upcoming films, including the first trailers Joel and Ethan Coen's The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Paul Greengrass' 22 July, and Alfonso CuarĂ³n's Golden Lion-winning Roma. With a few weeks until its release, the only remaining Netflix question until this morning was Gareth Evans' Apostle. The acclaimed action director's follow-up to The Raid 2 will hold its World Premiere at Austin's Fantastic Fest on Friday, and we finally have our first look at what promises to be one of the craziest movies of the year thus far. Watch the first trailer below!

Early buzz has compared this film to Robin Hardy's British horror classic The Wicker Man, and there are several shades of that chilling movie in this first look. An intrepid detective, a creepy cult on an island, an enigmatic leader- there are a number of similar elements in play. To be fair though, Dan Stevens' Thomas Richardson seems to have a completely different, much more personal motivation, and I'm confident that Gareth Evans has some tricks up his sleeve. He's a master at taking familiar concepts and doing something fresh with them.

If you've seen The Raid or its superior sequel, you know Evans can stage an action sequence better than almost anyone in the business. But Apostle looks like a huge change of pace from his previous epics, and I'm excited to see the budding auteur flex his muscles in a new genre. The film looks gorgeous and harrowing (the cinematography by Evans collaborator Matt Flannery is seriously impressive), filled with enough disturbing sequences to send many audience members to the hills. And with Stevens, Sing Street's Lucy Boynton, and Michael Sheen leading the cast, there's a nice dose of prestige to go along with the pulpy story.

Can we talk about how great October 12 is looking? You can do a double feature of Damien Chazelle's First Man and Drew Goddard's Bad Times at the El Royale, and then follow it up with Evans' Apostle at home. I'm going to be in movie heaven that day.

Apostle will premiere at Fantastic Fest on Friday. The film will arrive on Netflix on October 12.
