'The Rider' director Chloe Zhao set to helm Marvel's 'The Eternals'

I gotta hand it to Marvel. For a studio that loves to announce things years in advance, the team has done a pretty good job of keeping the post-Avengers 4 slate under wraps. Okay, so we know Jon Watts will return to direct next year's Spider-Man: Far From Home, which presumably means Peter Parker won't stay dead. But after that? It's mostly a mystery. James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 was intended as the big Summer 2020 kick-off movie, but controversial circumstances have seemingly canceled that film altogether. We know Cate Shortland is working on a Black Widow solo movie, and we can probably deduce that Black Panther 2 will happen sooner rather than later. Still, I'm impressed at the restraint demonstrated by Kevin Feige and company.

But the details are starting to leak out. On Friday, we learned new info about a prospective Marvel project, one that seems to be on the fast track for production.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, director Chloe Zhao will be at the helm for The Eternals, which will showcase a new and remarkable corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The script was penned by Matthew and Ryan Firbo, who co-wrote Black List script Ruin. According to THR's report, the film adaptation of Jack Kirby's comic series will follow the eponymous Eternals, "near-immortal beings" created by the mystical Celestials, who exist in opposition to the "monstrous" Deviants. The report also notes the importance of a love story between characters named Ikaris and Sersi. That's, uh, something. No idea what to make of this stuff.

Zhao is best known for directing The Rider, which is one of the most critically acclaimed releases of 2018. The American neo-Western paints a tragic picture of a young rodeo cowboy (played by Brady Jandreau), and it's basically the polar opposite of an MCU movie. As a result, Zhao's hiring has prompted a mixed reaction from Film Twitter. Many are overjoyed by the idea of a female director getting a chance to join the big leagues after her breakout indie, but other cinephiles are lamenting the loss of a prominent voice in the independent sphere. Personally, I couldn't be more intrigued to see how Zhao approaches this material. Her take on the American West was gorgeous beyond compare, and I really think we could see a visually strong and vibrant Marvel movie (something of a rarity) with Zhao behind the camera.

The concept of The Eternals is definitely daring, but I'm never going to doubt Marvel at this point. They could sell tickets to just about anything.

Look for more on The Eternals as production approaches.
