Meet Brie Larson's Carol Danvers in the first trailer for 'Captain Marvel'

Have Marvel fans had a chance to breathe? Okay, good. Here we go again.

In case you haven't been paying attention, 2018 has been something of an eventful year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ryan Coogler's Black Panther became one of the biggest box office hits in history and a genuine cultural phenomenon, but the MCU really began to change in late April. Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Infinity War changed the landscape of the universe with the snap of its fingers, as Thanos (Josh Brolin) used the infinity gauntlet to turn many of our favorite heroes into dust. And even though it promised a fairly breezy, enjoyable journey, the post-credits scene for Peyton Reed's Ant-Man and the Wasp disintegrated three additional characters, leaving another hero in a seriously tricky position. How will Marvel fix this? How can our heroes be saved? If the final scene of Infinity War is any indication, Carol Danvers is on her way. The studio's first female-led superhero movie, Captain Marvel, will arrive early next year, and it promises to be a big one. Moments ago, Marvel released the first trailer on Good Morning America- watch it below!

I mean, this trailer opens with Brie Larson's hero crash-landing in a Blockbuster Video. If that isn't Film Twitter catnip, I don't know what is.

This looks pretty great, and I'm a sucker for Marvel movies that explore new corners of this rapidly growing universe. Beyond the setting, there's a real 90s aesthetic on display here, and it almost feels like we're going to see a classic mystery movie housed inside this gigantic sci-fi extravaganza. The de-aging effects on Samuel L. Jackson look terrific, and to the surprise of no one, Larson looks tremendous as Marvel's most powerful superhero. It's definitely clear that some of the visuals aren't finished just yet (this film was shooting earlier this year), but I'm thrilled to see this first clip going into more detail about the character of Carol than the plot.

In addition, there are a number of fun little details that any Marvel fan will notice. We know the Skrulls play a role in the story, so if you're wondering why Carol Danvers is punching an old lady on the subway, there's your answer. We also get a brief peek at Nick Fury's pager, which he used to call Captain Marvel at the end of Infinity War.

And when all is said and done, I have enormous trust in directors Anna Fleck and Ryan Boden, who had great success in the indie world prior to signing on for this one (go watch Mississippi Grind). If all goes well, Captain Marvel is going to be a treat.

Marvel's first female-led superhero film will arrive in theaters on March 8, 2019. Can Carol Danvers save the Avengers? We'll find out soon.
