Daily News: Rebecca Ferguson joins Chalamet in 'Dune,' Shane Black project heads to Netflix, Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig team up for murder mystery, and more

On the eve of this year's Toronto International Film Festival, we've been hit with a flood of movie news involving a number of upcoming projects. From casting news to updates on prospective projects, there's a lot happening in the movie world at the moment.

Here's a recap of the biggest news of the last two days!

Let's start with the next project from Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve. Multiple sources have confirmed that Rebecca Ferguson is in talks to join the cast of Dune, the acclaimed filmmaker's adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic novel. Per Deadline, Ferguson will play Lady Jessica, the mother of hero Paul Atreides, who will be played by Oscar nominee/budding superstar Timothée Chalamet. Villeneuve is reportedly splitting Dune into two movies, the first of which will begin shooting early next year.

After her breakout role as Ilsa Faust in the Mission: Impossible series, Ferguson has become one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. She appeared in last year's The Greatest Showman, and she'll be in a number of high-profile projects in the coming years. She'll play Rose the Hat in Mike Flanagan's Doctor Sleep, and she'll also appear alongside Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson in F. Gary Gray's upcoming Men in Black reboot.

Dune will likely arrive in theaters in 2020.

Shane Black's re-imagining of The Predator will premiere at TIFF tomorrow evening, but according to Collider, the director of The Nice Guys might have another project on the horizon. In the report, it's revealed that Netflix has acquired the rights to Cold Warrior, a project that spent a decade in development hell at Universal. There is no indication that the film (which was originally written by Chuck Mondry) will be Black's follow-up to The Predator will go into production after the reboot's debut, but Michelle Manning and Anthony Bagarozzi are still attached as producers. Cold Warrior follows the journey of a retired spy from the Cold War and a young agent- basically, it's a mismatched detective movie in the vein of Black's classics.

If you know me or my movie tastes, you know I have a special affinity for Black's work, especially The Nice Guys. I've been banging the drum for a Nice Guys sequel for the better part of two years now, but if Warner Bros. can't justify the budget to reunite Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, another Shane Black buddy comedy might be the next best thing. Collider reports that Cold Warrior was bought by Netflix late last year, so it may just linger in development at the streaming giant as well. Still, I can't help but be excited by the possibilities.

Rian Johnson is still prepping a new Star Wars trilogy, but in the meantime, the director of The Last Jedi will return to the mystery genre. Per Deadline, Johnson is set to direct Knives Out, a "contemporary murder mystery" starring Daniel Craig. Johnson collaborator Ram Bergman will produce, and the duo will shop the project around to buyers at this week's TIFF. After Bond 25 crumbled thanks to Danny Boyle's exit (more on that soon), Craig's schedule opened up for a small project like this, which means that Knives Out will shoot in November.

In a quote, Johnson said "I have been a huge fan and always wanted to work with him and as I worked on the script, trying to get it right, Ram and I were wringing our hands over who could be the detective. Then, serendipitously, we heard Daniel might have a small window, and it worked out. He's an actor of extraordinary range, and we are looking forward to the fun of finding that modern detective, and collaborating with Daniel on creating a new Poirot."

Look for more on Knives Out in the near future.

Finally, let's end today's round-up with some Bond news. Variety is reporting that the producers of the upcoming Bond 25 are working fast to meet with candidates to replace Danny Boyle. The list of names now includes White Boy Rick's Yann Demange (the favorite before Boyle was even mentioned as a possibility), Star Trek 4's S.J. Clarkson, and American Animals' Bart Layton. Justin Kroll, the writer of the above report, noted on Twitter that Barbara Broccoli and EON could still stretch for Edgar Wright or Christopher McQuarrie, but it would be something of a "Hail Mary."

According to the article, Clarkson and Layton have yet to meet with producers, while Demange met before the TIFF-bound White Boy Rick was finished. Either way, I imagine this could be a long process once again, and I'm having trouble picturing a world where Bond 25 doesn't miss its release date. Still, I'm glad that Craig has found a project to do during this behind-the-scenes madness, especially one as intriguing as Knives Out.

As always, look for more news on Bond as the story progresses.
