Wes Anderson aiming for February 2019 production start on new film

Four long years after the Oscar-winning success of The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wes Anderson finally returned to the big screen with Isle of Dogs. The director's second foray into the world of stop-motion animation earned rave reviews from critics (89% on Rotten Tomatoes and 82 on Metacritic), and it become a solid arthouse hit in the process, grossing $31.9 million in the U.S. But even with strong notices and decent financial success, Isle of Dogs will likely go down as one of the most controversial entries in Anderson's filmography. The release of the film saw the acclaimed auteur receive criticism for his take on Japanese culture, re-igniting old debates about Anderson's cultural blind spots. Even as a fan of the director's work, I found the stop-motion odyssey to be a unique and colorful funhouse often let down by its own story.

Isle of Dogs could ultimately find its way into the awards race at the end of the year, but only time will tell. For now, Anderson fans have something else to get very excited about.

In something of a surprise, Indiewire is reporting that Anderson is currently preparing his next film. Forget another lengthy wait- the indie cinema maestro will be stepping behind the camera again very soon. Per this report, Anderson has chosen to shoot his next project in the city of Angoulême in southwestern France, where the film will likely be set as well. Production on this mystery film will commence in February 2019, lasting up to four months. Taking into account the relatively short production window, I feel safe in assuming that Anderson will be returning to the live-action realm with this new movie. There are no additional details on the plot or cast of the film, but it's almost a certainty that many Anderson regulars will be participating. Studio backing is also unknown, though the filmmaker's last two projects were both distributed by Fox Searchlight.

As someone who regularly cites The Grand Budapest Hotel as one of the best films of the decade, I'm always thrilled to see another Anderson movie come to fruition. And considering my overall disappointment with his last project, I'm happy that he's moving forward with his follow-up sooner rather than later. Look for more details on Anderson's latest as they emerge.
