Stunning new trailer for 'Bad Times at the El Royale' previews Drew Goddard's ensemble crime thriller

In less than 24 hours, the 2018/19 Oscar season will be underway.

Crazy, right? It wasn't too long ago that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences handed out the Best Picture trophy to The Shape of Water, but here we are, getting ready to do it all over again. The critics are flowing into Venice, and Damien Chazelle's Neil Armstrong biopic First Man will blast off at a press screening tomorrow morning. From that starting gun, the movie world will experience two weeks of non-stop festival excitement, including a plethora of world premieres at Venice, this weekend's Telluride Film Festival, and next week's TIFF. But even with a significant amount of Oscar players and prestige titles, one film has gathered a significant amount of attention outside the festival circuit. That film is Bad Times at the El Royale, Drew Goddard's first directorial outing since 2012's The Cabin in the Woods. Bad Times won't be debuting at any festivals (that we know of yet), but it's still one of the most anticipated movies of the fall. Hours ago, 20th Century Fox released the second trailer for the film- watch it below!

Like last week's full trailer for Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria, the idea of another trailer almost feels futile in this situation. The teaser for Bad Times at the El Royale did such a perfect job of conveying the vibe and the concept that it's nearly impossible for anyone in the Fox marketing department to follow up on that. Somehow, they managed to craft a second trailer that made me even more excited for Goddard's sophomore feature.

This new look gets off to a slightly rocky start, feeling kind of scattershot in its attempt to sell a unique tonal clash. But when that classic tune from Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons kicks in, all bets are off. The dialogue is unleashed at the same rapid clip as the bullets, with a magnetic cast at the center of it all. The film also looks flat-out gorgeous, displaying an ingenious mixture of period piece details and classic noir stylings. All around, this thing appears to be in excellent shape.

What more can be said about Bad Times? We're in for a treat here, folks, and I can't wait to see how it all plays out. Even after two trailers, I don't know exactly what Goddard is going for with this film, and that seriously excites me.

Bad Times at the El Royale will hit theaters on October 12.
