New Trailers: Dazzling teasers for 'The Other Side of the Wind' & 'First Man' debut as Venice Film Festival begins

After weeks of anticipation, the Venice Film Festival has officially begun. This marks the beginning of a long Oscar season for a number of films, including many from Netflix. The media power player was shut out of this year's Cannes Film Festival, so content chief Ted Sarandos took his prestige titles to Venice and Toronto instead. Alfonso Cuaron's Roma, Paul Greengrass' 22 July, and Joel and Ethan Coen's The Ballad of Buster Scruggs will all debut on the Lido in the coming days, while David Mackenzie's Outlaw King and Jeremy Saulnier's Hold the Dark will drop at next week's TIFF. In addition to those big-ticket titles, there's one other Netflix project that will surely catch the attention of festival-goers in Italy- Orson Welles' The Other Side of the Wind. The Citizen Kane director's final film has been pieced together with funding from the streaming giant, and there's a great deal of curiosity to see how it all turned out. With a Venice and New York bow on the horizon, Netflix released the first trailer this morning- watch it below!

It's hard for me to view this as an actual film, since Welles didn't really get to finish production and it was subsequently completed without his guidance. Instead, I'm mostly looking at this as a historical document of sorts. Maybe it borders on the incomprehensible, or maybe it serves as an interesting summation of the career of one of cinema's giants.

I'm no Welles scholar, but you can bet I'll be watching this on November 2. This trailer previews something strange and unusual, a kind of self-referential odyssey into the mind of a filmmaker. Plus, it gives us a chance to see another great performance from the legendary John Huston. There's a certain verve and energy to the picture, which is probably the last thing I expected from a project that was completed 40 years after the fact. There's a lot to like here, and even if it doesn't all work, I imagine it'll still prove to be a rather compelling, one-of-a-kind watch.

The Other Side of the Wind will premiere on Netflix on November 2.

Now, just hours after it took Venice by storm, watch a new trailer for Damien Chazelle's First Man!

The initial trailer for this much-anticipated Neil Armstrong movie was good, but it felt a bit too conventional, both in its presentation of the usual biopic traits and its slightly over-dramatic musical swells. I never worried too much about it though, mostly because I have an extremely high level of trust in Chazelle. This trailer is more effective, giving viewers a brief taste of how the Oscar winner's take on the legendary astronaut will differ from more traditional interpretations of the material. With reviews pouring in from Venice (they're good so far- 81 on Metacritic and 92% on Rotten Tomatoes), I've been trying to avoid specifics on just what exactly Chazelle has pulled off with his follow-up to La La Land. Still, I don't think you need to read a million reviews to deduce that Chazelle won't be aiming for uplifting heroics with his story of the first mission to the moon.

Where the first trailer focused on hitting the expected beats, this new trailer sells a quiet, unique vibe, one that sits between understated wonder and bombast. And of course, it's clear that we're in for some special, IMAX-worthy sequences. Also, if this is our first real taste of Justin Hurwitz's score for the film, I'm really digging it so far. What more can I say? La La Land was my favorite movie of 2016, and I can't wait to see how Chazelle continues his thrilling career.

First Man will play at Telluride and Toronto before arriving in U.S. theaters on October 12. While you're here, check out the latest poster for the film, which is an improvement on the teaser poster.

Look for more reviews and festival notes in the coming days.
