A24 and Gaspar Noe throw a wild dance party in new trailer for 'Climax'

When Gaspar Noe's Climax first premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival, most of the critics I follow on Twitter were not even slightly excited to see it. Noe is one of international arthouse cinema's most prominent provocateurs, and his films are designed to shock audiences no matter the cost. Noe's last film, Love, was pretty much a 3-D porno. Before that, he made Irreversible and Enter the Void, both controversial in their own right (especially the former). Not exactly lightweight fare. So it was honestly a genuine shock when critics left Climax with almost nothing negative to say, deeming the bonkers dance/horror crossover as Noe's finest hour. As a result, A24 dipped its toes into foreign acquisitions for the first time with this film, which promises to be one of the most anticipated of the fall. This morning, the studio released the first U.S. trailer for Climax- watch it below!

Amusingly enough, this full trailer is less invigorating than the brief teaser released during Cannes, which was the kind of first look that made me stop and take notice. Today's trailer takes more time to introduce the concept and the players, establishing this troupe of dancers who end up guzzling a bunch of LSD-laced sangria. As expected, things get pretty wild at a certain point, accompanied by a handful of joyous critical raves. I was already sold after that initial clip, but this is another smart marketing move by A24.

Climax looks light on plot and heavy on style, which is another way of saying that it seems like something I'll enjoy. I haven't mustered up the courage to watch Noe's other films, but I may have to change that before this one arrives. Climax will debut in U.S. theaters in 2018- no official date has been set yet. It'll play in the Midnight Madness section at the 43rd Toronto International Film Festival.

While you're here, check out a new poster for the film below!
