Weekend Box Office: 'Deadpool 2' opens strong with $125 million; 'Avengers: Infinity War' crosses $1.8 billion worldwide

After Avengers: Infinity War ran the tables for three straight weeks, this weekend gave the Merc With a Mouth his time in the spotlight. Just over two years after Deadpool broke out in February 2016, Ryan Reynolds' fast-talking assassin returned to theaters with a much bigger sequel. Expectations were high for Deadpool 2, but despite strong buzz and good reviews, Wade Wilson couldn't quite beat his own record. Don't get me wrong- this movie still did excellent business during its debut frame, grossing $125 million over three days. But Deadpool 2's opening falls short of the original's $132.4 million debut, which was one of the more shocking box office performances in recent memory. While I'm sure Reynolds and everyone at Fox would have loved to beat the original film's R-rated opening weekend record, Deadpool 2 still holds the second biggest opening in that department, ahead of films such as last fall's IT, The Matrix Reloaded, and American Sniper. It's the biggest R-rated summer opening by a large margin- unless you count inflation, of course.

Worldwide, Deadpool 2 also racked up significant business, grossing $176.3 million for a total global opening of $301.3 million. While ratings obviously differ on a country to country basis, Deadpool 2 now holds the highest worldwide opening for a film with an R rating in history. The film received a strong "A" CinemaScore, which indicates that audiences very much liked what they saw. With upcoming competition from Disney/Lucasfilm's Solo: A Star Wars Story, I highly doubt that Wade Wilson's second adventure will match the 2.74 multiplier of the original. However, the original Deadpool had the benefit of a double holiday weekend (Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day) to increase business, so the sequel could hold well throughout the rest of the summer. At the very least, I wouldn't be surprised to see the film match or surpass its predecessor's $783.1 million worldwide total.

In other box office news, it was another good weekend for Avengers: Infinity War, even with the competition from Deadpool 2. The third chapter in the Avengers franchise grossed $28.6 million in the US this weekend, down only 53.8% from last weekend and leading to a spectacular domestic total of $595 million. Infinity War is still the 8th highest-grossing movie of all time, but it seems poised to at least pass Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The Avengers for the #6 slot. After that, it's anyone's guess. Overseas, the film racked up even more money this weekend, enough for a worldwide total of $1.8 billion. It sits only behind Avatar, Titanic, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it has its sights on passing the latter two in the coming weeks. In terms of pure international grosses, it sits behind only Avatar and The Force Awakens.

To cap off this report with a few other notes, Book Club opened to a solid $12.5 million, along with an "A-" CinemaScore for audiences. With little competition in the adult entertainment department for the next several weeks, look for Bill Holderman's film to keep going strong. In addition, John Krasinski's A Quiet Place now sits at a stellar $176.1 million, while Black Panther is holding strong at $697.7 million. Can Ryan Coogler's film cross $700 million, even with strong competition and a home media release? We'll find out soon.

Next weekend, get ready for the arrival of another Star Wars movie.
