Tom Cruise defies death in new trailer for 'Mission: Impossible- Fallout'

Summer 2018 is uncharacteristically front-loaded, and that could make things very interesting once we reach the dog days of the season. May and June are absolutely stacked this year- Avengers: Infinity War (okay, technically April, but whatever), Deadpool 2, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Incredibles 2, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom are kicking off the hottest movie-going period in style. But while July 2017 featured major titles such as Spider-Man: Homecoming, War for the Planet of the Apes, and Dunkirk, July 2018 is headlined by Ant-Man and the Wasp, Skyscraper, and Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again. Big movies, sure, but not game-changers or cultural events. Thankfully, July is saving the best for last, with Mission: Impossible- Fallout arriving on the 27th. The sixth chapter in the Tom Cruise-led franchise that just seems to get crazier and crazier, Fallout is undeniably one of the most hotly anticipated titles of the summer. After releasing a sensational first trailer during the Super Bowl, Paramount delivered the second full look at Ethan Hunt's latest adventure early this morning. Watch it below!

There's an inherent problem to releasing such an incredible first trailer- it's very hard for your marketing campaign to top it later. I maintain that the initial trailer for Fallout is one of the best in years, a high-octane burst of adrenaline that previewed everything we love about this franchise in a perfectly edited clip. Even with the glut of trailers on Super Bowl Sunday, my jaw was on the floor when I finished watching that first look. This trailer was likely always going to fall short of generating that level of excitement, so it's something of a miracle that it comes close, and it leads me to believe that Paramount and director Christopher McQuarrie have something truly special here. I'm a little concerned about recycling Sean Harris' Solomon Lane as the villain, but everything else on display is so impressive that my worries are completely overshadowed.

I love how this series has leaned into the sheer madness of the stunts, and it seems increasingly likely that Tom Cruise has some kind of death wish. The action looks appropriately brilliant, and it appears to be an excellent collaboration between cinematographer Rob Hardy and McQuarrie. With the exception of Jeremy Renner, the M:I franchise's tremendous supporting crew is back for another ride, and I'm thrilled about the addition of Henry Cavill to the cast. While he appears to be playing a villain, I still think there's some truth to the idea that he's taking over for Cruise. After the disappointment of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., I would be ecstatic to see Cavill get his own spy franchise. Overall, this is obviously one of my most anticipated of the summer. I love this series, and I can't wait to see this on the biggest screen possible.

Mission: Impossible- Fallout opens on July 27.
