Thrilling teaser trailer for 'Bohemian Rhapsody' showcases Freddie Mercury's epic journey

A movie about Queen frontman Freddie Mercury seems like a slam dunk, right?

While not nearly as iconic as The Beatles or The Rolling Stones, Mercury and his bandmates created some of the most recognizable and popular rock songs of all time. From the famous beat of "Another One Bites the Dust" to stadium anthem "We Will Rock You," there's no denying Queen's place in music history. With Mr. Robot star Rami Malek on board to play Mercury, this biopic, titled Bohemian Rhapsody after the group's magnum opus, initially seemed to be one of the most enticing offerings of 2018. But complications arose thanks to director Bryan Singer, a controversial and widely despised figure who has been accused of improper sexual relationships with underage boys in the past. Singer directed much of Bohemian Rhapsody, but he was fired by 20th Century Fox for unprofessional behavior on set, which many viewed as a way of indirectly addressing the allegations against him. Eddie the Eagle director Dexter Fletcher took over, and the film finally wrapped shooting. But what will the final product look like? Will it end up serving as the epic cinematic treatment this band deserves? Or will its production woes get in the way? While we won't find out until November, Fox released the first full look at the hotly anticipated film earlier today. Watch the trailer for Bohemian Rhapsody below!

I'll be honest: as a fan of Queen's music, I would be there for this movie regardless of whether the trailer was spectacular or disastrous. Thankfully, Bohemian Rhapsody looks pretty terrific. Who knows if it's an Oscar contender at this stage in the game, but I really like this brief little teaser trailer. It remixes the most famous notes of Queen's iconic songs to great effect, previewing a delightfully wild and eye-popping journey with the British band. And five months away from release, that's pretty much all we need to see. I'm not overly familiar with the mannerisms and personality of Freddie Mercury, but Rami Malek looks to be doing a fairly solid job, even if I'm not sure what the hell is going on with his teeth. The supporting cast is terrific as well, led by Sing Street's Lucy Boynton, Aidan Gillen, and Mike Myers, who makes a brief appearance in the trailer (under heavy makeup, of course). But beyond the excellent ensemble, I'm mostly excited to just see a rock epic done on this scale. As a sucker for a good music-driven movie (and a great rise-and-fall story), Bohemian Rhapsody has plenty of inherent appeal. Plus, I've always wondered why none of the late 20th century rock groups have received the biopic treatment as of yet. Maybe this one will kickstart a trend?

Bohemian Rhapsody arrives in theaters on November 2.
