Steven Spielberg and Leonardo DiCaprio in talks for Ulysses S. Grant biopic

Steven Spielberg may be turning 72 years old this year, but if the last few months are any indication, he has zero plans of slowing down. After finishing up his blockbuster hit Ready Player One in late March, many in the industry began to wonder what Spielberg would do next. While it appears The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara has been scrapped for good, the iconic director still has several projects on tap. He's tackling the fifth Indiana Jones movie with Harrison Ford, set for a July 2020 release, but he's also set to remake West Side Story with Lincoln scribe Tony Kushner. Warner Bros. and DC Comics recently announced that Spielberg will produce and possibly direct Blackhawk, and who knows if that secret table read will ever amount to anything. Should all of these projects come to fruition, they would likely keep him busy for the next several years. But yesterday, it was revealed that Spielberg is in early discussions for another major endeavor, one that will re-team the filmmaker with one of the biggest movie stars on the planet.

According to Deadline, Spielberg and Leonardo DiCaprio are in talks with Lionsgate to produce a biopic of U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant, based on the recent biography by Ron Chernow. Spielberg will direct the film, while DiCaprio will star and produce with Appian Way's Jennifer Davisson. The film is being written by Robin Hood scribe David James Kelly. The Deadline report notes that this biopic is a "priority" for the two Hollywood megastars, even with a multitude of other projects on the horizon. While I've already noted Spielberg's other upcoming movies, DiCaprio is a very busy man as well. He's currently filming Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but he also has several prospective projects in the making, including two potential collaborations with Martin Scorsese (a biopic of Teddy Roosevelt and an adaptation of Killers of the Flower Moon) and a Paramount-distributed biopic of Leonardo Da Vinci. None of these movies have made any real progress, but anything could happen after the Tarantino pic wraps up.

The idea of Spielberg and DiCaprio working together again after the success of Catch Me If You Can is exciting, but let's be honest, who knows what'll happen with this movie. There has been so much news on the upcoming movies of these two industry titans, and until dates are set and casting decisions are made, I won't get too excited or concerned. I'm not exactly sure why DiCaprio wants to play two different U.S. Presidents, nor why Spielberg wants to make another Civil War movie after Lincoln. But if the material is there, this could be quite interesting.
