Release Dates: 'Doctor Sleep,' 'Godzilla 2,' Elton John biopic announce new dates

As the day comes to a close, we've received a bit of news on 2019 and 2020 release dates. Courtesy of Exhibitor Relations, the news broke just hours ago that Warner Bros. and Paramount have shifted around a few key films on their upcoming slate.

In blockbuster news, Godzilla 2 (also known as Godzilla: King of the Monsters) is moving from its original March 22, 2019 date and shifting to May 31 of the same year. This puts the Michael Dougherty-directed sequel in the heart of the summer, where it will open one week after Guy Ritchie's remake of Aladdin and one week before Sony's Charlie's Angels reboot (Gambit is also dated for June 7, but I can't see that happening). Nonetheless, I'm feeling confident in Godzilla 2's ability to thrive in a busy summer. Even if many hold lukewarm feelings about its 2014 predecessor, Warner Bros.' so-called MonsterVerse is quickly turning into a massive franchise. Plus, the cast is spectacular- Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Sally Hawkins, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Ken Watanabe, and more headline the project. Dougherty, Max Borenstein, and Zach Shields penned the screenplay.

The most noteworthy addition to the release calendar is Doctor Sleep, the long-awaited sequel to Stephen King's The Shining. Based on the book by King, the sequel follows adult Danny Torrance as he grapples with the events of his childhood and the rest of his life. The film will arrive in theaters on January 24, 2020, where it is currently the only film scheduled. At the helm for this adaptation is director Mike Flanagan, who already impressed King fans with his take on Gerald's Game. In addition, Flanagan has been known for elevating horror material (see: 2016's Ouija: Origin of Evil), so fans concerned by the quality of the book are likely to be optimistic. Flanagan will co-write the film with Akiva Goldsman, and it's likely that casting will begin soon.

The story of Elton John is getting the big-screen treatment, and it'll arrive in theaters very soon. Kingsman star Taron Egerton (who worked with Elton in last year's sequel The Golden Circle) will play the pop icon in Rocketman, which is now set to be released on May 17, 2019. The biopic will face off against Lionsgate's John Wick: Chapter 3, as well as Universal's A Dog's Journey, Warner Bros.' The Sun Is Also a Star, and Sony's Men in Black reboot. Chances are high that one, if not several of those films will move. Bohemian Rhapsody and Eddie the Eagle director Dexter Fletcher is at the helm for Rocketman, and Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall is on script duties. Paramount will distribute.

Finally, the two studios revealed a few smaller bits of information to round out this group of changes. Warner Bros.' Crazy Rich Asians will now be released on August 15, giving the film a five-day weekend to rack up more box office grosses. The studio also announced that Mark Wahlberg's The Six Billion Dollar Man will now arrive on June 5, 2020, a full year after its original release date. I still don't know if we'll ever see this one reach the big screen. Meanwhile, Paramount has dated Tiffany Haddish's Limited Partners for June 28, 2019. Plot details are still unknown, but the script comes courtesy of Adam Cole-Kelly and Sam Pitman. And while they still have Bumblebee in the works for this Christmas, Transformers 7 has been removed from the calendar completely. The reboot is coming- get ready.
