Peculiar trailer for Robert Pattinson's Sundance hit 'Damsel' debuts online

In the span of just a few years, Robert Pattinson went from blockbuster star to indie darling. And if we're being honest, his cachet in the world of auteur and independent cinema is only growing. The former Twilight and Harry Potter star has already worked with a variety of talented director, starring in films such as the Safdie Brothers' Good Time, James Gray's The Lost City of Z, and David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis. Next up, he has a new sci-fi film with French icon Claire Denis called High Life, and he's also set to star in A24's The Lighthouse, which comes from The Witch director Robert Eggers. But before those high profile projects arrive, Pattinson has a small, but much buzzed-about movie hitting theaters in America very soon- Damsel, a strange revisionist western with Mia Wasikowska. The film played at Sundance earlier this year to a warm reception, and it looks like Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter directors David and Nathan Zellner have another little hit on their hands. Earlier today, Magnolia Pictures released the first official trailer- watch it below!

Unique spins on the western genre don't always live up to their lofty ambitions (remember Slow West?), but I really like the look and feel of this trailer. Damsel looks quirky and strange, but it also seems grounded in the story of these two distinct characters. I remember plenty of critics and festival-goers praising Butterscotch, the miniature horse who joins Pattinson's character on his journey, so it's no surprise that she's a major factor in this first look. Who knows, maybe Parks and Recreation's Li'l Sebastian has some competition in that department. Anyways, the real appeal here is Pattinson, who has delivered a fine array of performances in the last few years. Even in something like Good Time, a film I was less impressed by than everyone else seemed to be, the man formerly known as Edward Cullen was nothing short of fascinating. As Samuel, Pattinson seems to be playing a kind-hearted, goofy western dolt, and I'm excited to see where this performance goes. This could be an indie movie to look out for this summer.

Damsel arrives in limited released on June 22.
