'Logan' director James Mangold set to develop Lucasfilm's Boba Fett spin-off

With Solo: A Star Wars Story arriving in theaters this weekend, we're almost at the end of the line in terms of formally announced Star Wars movies. Of course, Disney has plans to make Star Wars movies until the end of time, but the first wave of titles since the Lucasfilm acquisition is almost complete. J.J. Abrams will round out the sequel trilogy with Episode IX in December 2019, but everything after that is up in the air. The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has plans for a new trilogy of his own, Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are working on a series of their own, and there have been rumors of more Star Wars stories focused on Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi and fan favorite Boba Fett. Yesterday, the latter of the two prospective standalone movies received an important update, one that is sure to please many fans.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit, James Mangold is currently working on a Boba Fett movie with Lucasfilm. Mangold is no stranger to the world of sci-fi and fantasy, having recently directed 2013's The Wolverine and last year's Logan, which received some of the best reviews for a comic book film in history. Per THR, Mangold will co-write and direct the Fett movie, a film that has been in the works since Lucasfilm announced its initial slate of Star Wars movies. THR's sources later noted that Simon Kinberg, director of the upcoming Dark Phoenix, will co-write the script with Mangold. Chronicle director Josh Trank was reportedly working on this project when he was signed by Lucasfilm for an untitled Star Wars project, but he was later fired after the Fantastic Four debacle.

The report goes on to note that Lucasfilm is developing projects on a "slew of characters," including the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. As previously reported, Stephen Daldry is in talks to direct the film, but there is no script as of yet, so I don't think we'll be getting that one in 2020 as rumored.

I think we're all experiencing a little bit of Star Wars fatigue at this point, especially with the general lack of enthusiasm around Solo. But I'm going to try to avoid looking at the big Lucasfilm picture and focus instead on this specific piece of news, which is an enormously exciting development. Logan was one of my favorite films of 2017, and it remains one of the strongest superhero films (if you can even call it that) ever made. While Mangold's Boba Fett movie will likely have a few more limitations in regards to content (specifically violence), it's sure to be an aesthetic and craft achievement. Mangold is a strong writer and filmmaker, and I'm excited to see him take on the Star Wars universe. But knowing Lucasfilm's recent track record with famous and unique creative talents, I have to maintain a certain degree of skepticism. Here's hoping that things have changed in that department.

Mangold was originally supposed to direct an adaptation of Don Winslow's The Force this year, but that project has stagnated. Instead, he's currently in pre-production on Ford v. Ferrari, which features a cast led by Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Caitriona Balfe, and Noah Jupe. The 20th Century Fox film will shoot this summer.

Look for more on the Boba Fett project as it develops. The latest chapter in the Star Wars saga, Solo, is in theaters today.
