Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly are 'The Sisters Brothers' in incredible first trailer for Jacques Audiard's new Western

It turned out to be a pretty great festival for everyone who attended, but there were plenty of disappointed cinephiles when the initial 2018 Cannes lineup was announced. And that was simply a matter of expectations- many films that were expected to appear on the Croisette opted to wait until the fall. While fans were disappointed by the omission of highly anticipated projects like Xavier Dolan's The Life and Death of John F. Donovan and Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria, perhaps the most prominent Cannes no-show was The Sisters Brothers, from Rust and Bone and Dheepan director Jacques Audiard. An all-star western from a director who won the Palme d'Or in 2015 seemed like a slam dunk, but the filmmakers decided to wait for Oscar gold. With the fall festivals on the distant horizon, Annapurna Pictures released the incredible first trailer for The Sisters Brothers earlier today. Watch it below!

If fans didn't already have their eye on The Sisters Brothers, it surely has to be on everyone's radar after this dynamite trailer. Despite my general unfamiliarity with Audiard's work (I've heard so many good things about A Prophet that it's a miracle I haven't seen it), I was always excited for this movie just because of the cast alone. I mean, come on- Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, John C. Reilly, and Riz Ahmed in a Western? Count me in, please.

Somehow, The Sisters Brothers looks even more remarkable than I ever imagined. First, I had no idea that this was basically a comedy, and that's an enticing proposition with the talent involved. Not only does this look gorgeous from a visual perspective, but it seems like everyone has brought their A-game. I love seeing Joaquin Phoenix back in Inherent Vice mode, as he's maybe one of the most underrated comedic talents working today. I'm also thrilled to see John C. Reilly taking on a role with another auteur filmmaker. He does some of his best work when he walks that thin line between drama and farce, and Eli Sisters seems like the perfect role for Reilly. Jake Gyllenhaal is brilliant in everything he does, and this seems like a great vehicle for Riz Ahmed as well. Put it all together, and you've got a fresh new spin on the Western genre that looks like an absolute blast.

Also, props to whoever cut this thing- this is one of the best trailers I've seen all year. The opening blasts of gunfire highlighting the date and title, the remix of "Tainted Love," the rapid editing as the trailer progresses- this is brilliant stuff.

Look for this one to premiere at Venice, Telluride, or Toronto. While there's no official date yet, The Sisters Brothers will arrive sometime in the fall. I'll be there as soon as it opens.
