Jake Gyllenhaal in talks to play lead villain in 'Spider-Man: Homecoming 2'

UPDATE: Variety has revealed that Michael Keaton will be reprising his role as Adrian Toomes/Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2. In addition, the trade magazine revealed that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein will also be writing the sequel.

*SPOILERS for Avengers: Infinity War will follow.*

Marvel has a tendency to shake things up in their movies with major plot twists, but last month's Avengers: Infinity War altered the very fabric of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a way we've never seen before. After Josh Brolin's Thanos snapped his fingers to wipe out half the universe, several of our favorite Marvel heroes vanished before our very eyes, including Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther, Chris Pratt's Star-Lord, and Tom Holland's young Spider-Man. We'll have to wait a year to see how things play out in Avengers 4, but as a result, Marvel is keeping their future plans very close to the vest. Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel will both be released between now and the finale of the Infinity War saga, but said films are prequels that will have only loose connections to the main series. In terms of post-Avengers 4 plans, Marvel has only confirmed two films- James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 and Jon Watts' Spider-Man: Homecoming 2.

You're probably wondering- how can there be a Spider-Man movie with no Spider-Man? If anything, Sony's sequel announcement has tipped Marvel's hand for Avengers 4, and it's only a matter of how things play out from here. With production likely to go underway soon, Sony and Marvel have begun casting major roles for the sequel, including an A-list Oscar nominee.

According to multiple reports, Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to play the villainous Mysterio in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2. While Gyllenhaal has nearly appeared in many big-budget blockbusters before, he has never sealed the deal in the past. Should Gyllenhaal ink the deal, he would join Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Marisa Tomei in the sequel, which will follow the events of both last year's Spider-Man: Homecoming and next year's Avengers 4. Director Jon Watts and writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers will be returning for the sequel as well. Per Variety, Sony is looking to cast both a new male and female lead for Homecoming 2, so it's likely that we'll be hearing even more casting news in the near future.

Gyllenhaal last appeared in three movies in 2017- Daniel Espinosa's sci-fi thriller Life, Bong Joon-ho's Netflix adventure Okja, and David Gordon Green's Boston Marathon drama Stronger. In 2018, Gyllenhaal will star in Paul Dano's Wildlife (IFC Films), Jacques Audiard's The Sisters Brothers (Annapurna), and Dan Gilroy's Velvet Buzzsaw (Netflix). According to this morning's reports, Gyllenhaal will film Cary Fukunaga's The American, a biopic of composer Leonard Bernstein, in the fall, which leaves his summer open for Spidey.

While the Academy has yet to recognize his genius, Gyllenhaal is undeniably one of the most brilliant actors working today. Even when the projects aren't all that impressive (think Life or Baltasar Kormakur's Everest), Gyllenhaal is able to elevate the material to new heights. I've always respected his ability to avoid blockbuster fare, but I think joining the Homecoming sequel is a smart move. A villainous role will allow him to have fun in a superhero universe without committing to a multi-year contract, which is what turns off many esteemed actors. I don't know much about the character of Mysterio, but I'm thrilled about Gyllenhaal joining the cast regardless. Look for more information on this sequel as production commences.

Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 (or whatever this movie ends up being called) will hit theaters on July 5, 2019.
