Gorgeous trailer for 'Wildlife' previews Paul Dano's directorial debut

Paul Dano is one of the most famous faces of modern independent cinema, stealing scenes in smaller films for well over a decade. And as many have noted, the 34 year old actor has also worked with some pretty incredible directors. Paul Thomas Anderson, Denis Villeneuve, Bong Joon-ho, Steve McQueen, Rian Johnson, Richard Linklater- the list goes on and on. After working in front of the camera in several hugely successful collaborations with world-class auteurs, Dano is finally stepping behind the camera himself with Wildlife, his much-anticipated directorial debut. The film, which follows the dissolve of a marriage in the 1950s, played to a warm reception at both Cannes and Sundance, earning accolades for Carey Mulligan's performance and Dano's direction. Earlier today, IFC Films released the first trailer for Wildlife, which will arrive in theaters later this year. Watch the teaser below!

In a year where critics were divided over most Sundance offerings, Wildlife was one of the few films that united virtually everyone at the wintry film festival. It's rare for a directorial debut to come with such high expectations, but Dano's incredible track record and proven cinephile credentials made this a must-see movie. And judging by this first teaser, Wildlife is going to live up to the hype. There's plenty of haunting and tragic imagery in this trailer, and there are more than a few shots that truly stunned me. As I discussed earlier this week in regards to his casting in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the my favorite working actors, bringing emotional depth and energy to every single role. As expected, he looks spectacular here, but I fully anticipate that the always-excellent Carey Mulligan will steal the show. In addition, Ed Oxenbould and Bill Camp are brilliant supporting players, certain to bring even more nuance to this tremendous cast. But for me, the real star here is Dano. He's a brilliant performer with a knack for choosing great projects, and I'm intrigued to see how he handles this adaptation. Everything I've heard and read indicates something slow, meditative, and emotionally devastating, which sounds like precisely my cup of tea. Look for more on Wildlife as the fall festival circuit draws near.

Wildlife will arrive in limited release on October 19.
