Burt Reynolds, Kurt Russell, Michael Madsen, and Tim Roth set to join Quentin Tarantino's 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'

With the way tentpoles and blockbuster movies are scheduled these days, every year is a big year for movies. I mean, just look at the calendar for 2018. By no means is this the biggest year in Hollywood history, and yet there's three Marvel films, a new Star Wars adventure, a return to Jurassic World, and a few big-ticket animated films. But if we're being completely honest, the 2018 calendar pales in comparison to 2019. Star Wars: Episode IX, the final chapter in Marvel's Infinity War saga, Toy Story 4, sequels to Wonder Woman and IT, and even a live-action remake of The Lion King- these are just a few of the movies set to arrive next year. Despite my enormous excitement for pretty much all of those films, there's one somewhat smaller title that I simply cannot wait to see in 2019- and I'm sure many other cinephiles will say the same.

Quentin Tarantino hasn't delivered a new movie since 2015's The Hateful Eight, which was decidedly less successful than some of his previous outings. But he'll be back next year with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a film about the movie business, the Manson Murders, and the end of the 1960s. We already knew he'd be reuniting with Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, with plans for Margot Robbie to join the cast as Sharon Tate as well. But earlier today, just in time for the kickoff of the 2018 the Cannes Film Festival, Deadline revealed that Tarantino is adding several more big names to the cast of his epic period pic. Some of the actors aren't necessarily surprising at all. The trade magazine announced that Kurt Russell, Michael Madsen, and Tim Roth are all in talks for "smaller roles," which could mean anything at this stage in the game. Russell appeared in Tarantino's Death Proof and the aforementioned Hateful Eight, Madsen starred in Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, and Hateful, and Roth is perhaps best known for his roles in Reservoir, Pulp Fiction, and Hateful, so these are all Tarantino regulars. But the more surprising name to pop up in this morning's report is Burt Reynolds, the Hollywood icon who has mostly found work in smaller movies in recent years. According to Deadline, Reynolds will play George Spahn, an elderly blind man who found himself caught up in the Manson story in a fascinating way.

For what has been billed as a major ensemble piece in the vein of Pulp Fiction, I'm not too surprised to see that Tarantino is assembling such a talented cast. Nonetheless, each added piece of this puzzle only makes me more excited to see what the director has in store for us next year.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will hit theaters on August 9, 2019.
