Full trailer for 'Venom' unveils Tom Hardy's take on the anti-hero

Back in February, Sony had the brilliant idea of rushing out a teaser trailer for their upcoming Venom movie, simply in order to have something to play in front of Marvel's Black Panther. This was despite the fact that Venom was still 8 months away, with very little footage ready to show off to audiences. Sony went for coverage over quality, and they paid the price dearly. The teaser was lambasted online by fans and general audience members alike, as its maddeningly vague approach lacked even a single look at Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock in the symbiote suit. The disastrous launch of the teaser just compounded the strangeness of this Spider-Man spin-off, which has been a profoundly odd project since its inception. Venom was announced unexpectedly, with director Ruben Fleischer and an all-star cast quickly signing up. Was the script (four credited writers!) really that good? Did Fleischer have some kind of brilliant vision for this film? Was the money that good? Well, we're getting closer to figuring it, as Sony has released a full trailer for Venom. Check it out below!

On paper, there's a lot to like about this movie. I'm a fan of Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Riz Ahmed. I enjoy both Zombieland and Gangster Squad, so I certainly think Ruben Fleischer is a capable director. And to be honest, we really haven't seen too many movies solely about comic book villains.

But Venom looks terrible.

This looks so, so silly, and each choice in the trailer is so completely baffling that I just don't know what this movie is supposed to be. I won't even go into the smaller things in this trailer, like Hardy's weird accent, the Venom voice sounding like the Beast from Beauty and the Beast, and Williams being relegated to the sidelines again. Instead, let's look at the big picture- Venom's powers are ridiculous and this movie looks so cheesy. After all the body horror stuff (okay, superhero movies, congrats on watching The Fly), we get numerous scenes of Tom Hardy whacking people with his symbiote arms, and I just don't get it. Are those his powers? Are we supposed to think that's cool? Scary? And then we get the big reveal of the actual Venom suit at the end, which looks pretty goofy too, especially the giant tongue. Throw in the fact that the movie looks visually stale and boring (even with Darren Aronofsky favorite Matthew Libatique on cinematography duties), and you have one anti-hero movie that I have zero interest in. Maybe another trailer down the road can change my mind.

Venom opens on October 5.
