Full trailer for Ron Howard's 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' debuts as Lucasfilm prepares for Cannes

Technically speaking, the beginning of May is the start of Hollywood's blockbuster season. Summer used to be the hottest time of the year for big-budget extravaganzas, but if we're being honest, this calendar system is looking a bit dated. After all, just take a quick peek at this year's schedule so far. Black Panther, now the 3rd highest-grossing movie of all time behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avatar, was released in February, followed quickly by star vehicles for Jennifer Lawrence and Alicia Vikander, Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time, and a new movie from Steven Spielberg. Not exactly a quiet time at the multiplex. However, even with these huge films, there's no doubt that we're on the cusp of some of 2018's biggest hits. Avengers: Infinity War will permanently change the Marvel Cinematic Universe on April 27, Deadpool 2 will bring the Merc with a Mouth back to the big screen on May 18, and Lucasfilm delivers Solo: A Star Wars Story just in time for Memorial Day. Perhaps the biggest unknown of Summer 2018, the latest installment in the Star Wars franchise has been through plenty of ups and downs. But for now, let's put all of that aside and check out the new trailer- watch it below!

Look, I think it's fair to say at this point that we've been over this movie's behind-the-scenes drama more than enough times. A highly public firing, massive reshoots, a new director, acting coaches- by now we've heard it all, and it's time to put that stuff aside. This movie arrives in theaters in just over a month, and Lucasfilm is making the bold move of taking the project to the Cannes Film Festival. Solo will never be able to escape its insider baseball controversies, and like many other film fans, I'll always wonder what a Lord/Miller version of this movie would have looked like. But we have to judge the film that was made, and to be honest, this looks pretty fun.

After a series of quick trailers released around the Super Bowl, this is by far the best look at Solo yet. The trailer plays up the gangster/heist/western vibe, showcasing the film's numerous genre influences and presenting something of a stylistic hodgepodge. And as messy as that sounds.....I dig it. The cast is undeniably terrific- Alden Ehrenreich as the roguish Solo, Donald Glover as the slick Lando Calrissian, with Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, and more in supporting roles. Visually, the film looks impressive, bolstered by Ron Howard's direction and the cinematography of Bradford Young. And after such a heavy, emotional Star Wars outing with The Last Jedi, I like the idea that we're going back to a looser feel. Solo has the potential to be a really fun diversion, which is what these Star Wars Stories should be. Consider me excited.

Solo: A Star Wars Story will open on May 25.
