Full trailer for Disney/Pixar's 'Incredibles 2' previews a thrilling superhero saga

When I was a kid (I say this like it was a lifetime ago- I'm only 19), there was something almost mythological about Pixar sequels. The animation studio made some of the most popular children's films of all time, but they rarely produced follow-ups to those instant classics. As a result, the mere possibility of these films became the subject of childhood dreams and hushed playground whispers. True story- I remember having a dream about walking through a movie theater lobby and seeing a poster for Monsters, Inc. 2. Another funny story is when a friend of mine informed me that a sequel to Finding Nemo was in the works.......back in 2007, years before Finding Dory actually got made. My brother and I cheered in the car when our mom told us that Toy Story 3 was finally happening after over a decade. It sounds weird, but if anything, this is a testament to how our collective imagination was captured by these movies. But even as the studio trotted out sequels to their most acclaimed films, a follow-up to Brad Bird's 2004 masterpiece The Incredibles remained a fantasy. After 14 long years, that idea is a fantasy no more. Check out the full trailer for Incredibles 2 below!

So I've been pretty vocal about my general disappointment with the first two teasers for Incredibles 2. The first one was merely an announcement teaser, while the second leaned so much into the humor of the movie that I couldn't figure out the story. With that said, this is by far the best look yet at one of 2018's most anticipated blockbusters. This trailer has everything you could want from a new Incredibles movie- eye-popping action, Michael Giacchino's tremendous score, family bickering, great callbacks to the original (I love that Frozone bit at the end). In addition to that, I'm really impressed by the animation on display, which seems to capture the 1950s/60s vibe of the original while simultaneously making some big strides in quality. I'm thrilled that we're getting an Incredibles 2, and this looks like a thrilling, smart, and hugely entertaining ride. At this point, I'm in.

But I will say, I'm still wondering if there's a general justification for why this movie was made, especially 14 years after its predecessor. Is there a story worth telling here? Every original Pixar movie comes from a place of heartfelt creativity. Some of them hit a few snags along the way (Brave and The Good Dinosaur come to mind), but they're never cash grabs. The sequels are a different beast. You can't argue that the Cars sequels were made for creative reasons, and while Finding Dory and Monsters University are generally well-liked, it's not exactly easy to justify their existence. Will Incredibles 2 stand as the rare Pixar sequel to match the Toy Story movies? Or will it fail to be a memorable follow-up? I'm pretty hopeful, but Brad Bird and company still have something to prove.

Incredibles 2 arrives in theaters on June 15.
