Final trailer for 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom' unleashes the dinosaurs

I think people forget just how much of a box office juggernaut Jurassic World was when it was released in June 2015. Colin Trevorrow's reboot of the classic Steven Spielberg property grossed $652.2 million in the US, enough to place it at #5 on the all time box office charts, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avatar, Black Panther, and Titanic. Even if you adjust for inflation, Jurassic World lands at #24 on the all time chart, ahead of recent blockbusters such as Marvel's The Avengers and Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. And we haven't even talked about the worldwide totals yet. When you combine its domestic and international grosses, Jurassic World is the fourth biggest hit in box office history with $1.671 billion, behind only The Force Awakens and the two James Cameron movies. The success of Jurassic World was so profoundly unexpected that it often gets overlooked, but this movie was a big, big deal. Was the film's success an anomaly or has Universal created a true financial behemoth with this franchise? We'll find out in just a few months when Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom hits theaters. Earlier today, Universal released the final trailer for the sequel- check it out below!

Whatever your feelings on Jurassic World may be, I guarantee I like that movie more than you. As demonstrated by my overwhelming adoration for Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One, I'm a sucker for any blockbuster roller-coaster ride that's executed in a slick and efficient manner, even if it's filled with vapid characters and silly narrative devices. Trevorrow's Jurassic World is big and ridiculous, but it also has exactly the right dose of that old-school magic. Simply put, it's exactly the kind of movie I want to watch in the middle of June. As someone who views the original as a top-notch guilty pleasure of sorts, I'm exactly the target market for Fallen Kingdom.

But like pretty much everyone else, I've been surprisingly disappointed by the trailers for J.A. Bayona's follow-up thus far. The initial teaser trailer was a mess, and while the extended Super Bowl spot was a step in the right direction, I maintained a certain degree of skepticism. And while it still seems like Universal's trailer editors have yet to figure out Fallen Kingdom's precise mixture of humor, big-budget action, and intense chills, this third and final trailer is the best one yet. While the previous first looks focused mainly on the evacuation of the island, this one finally leans into the plot thread that we all knew was coming- shady corporations turning dinosaurs into weapons. It's pulpy and absurd, yes, but it's exactly where this franchise should be going from here. Visually, the film looks spectacular, which is no surprise considering Bayona's presence in the director's chair. And as noted before, it looks like a darker and scarier sequel, something that I'm particularly excited about. All in all, this trailer does its job- I'm more excited now than I was before. Bring on the dinos.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will arrive on June 22.
