Wild, strange first trailer debuts for Boots Riley's surreal Sundance hit 'Sorry to Bother You'

In comparison to recent years at Sundance, the 2018 edition of the festival was a surprisingly quiet one. There was no genuine smash hit that critics hailed as a must-see, and while plenty of films received a positive reception, the slate couldn't match up to 2018. After the festival, some Oscar pundits even speculated that no film from the festival would find success at next year's Academy Awards, which is especially disappointing when you consider the awards season presence of Sundance movies (Call Me By Your Name, Manchester by the Sea, Whiplash, etc.) in recent years. But just because awards are out of the question doesn't mean there were no interesting movies at Sundance. From the outside looking in, one of the many titles that caught my eye was Boots Riley's Sorry to Bother You, which was quickly labeled as the weirdest film of the fest. Annapurna picked it up for a summer release date, and the studio just released the first trailer for the film. Check it out below!

This trailer is definitely selling a strange, unconventional movie, but I'm not sure if Annapurna's marketing department is really preparing us for what we're in for here. I was surprised to learn that Sorry to Bother You is actually a sci-fi movie, set in a trippy, undeniably weird parallel universe of sorts (read the IMDb logline, it's all there). It's no surprise that Annapurna is shying away from this angle in the trailer, as it would probably alienate a certain segment of the audience. That being said, Sorry to Bother You still looks nothing short of bonkers, a corporate racial satire that seems to blend energetic filmmaking with biting social commentary. From uncomfortable garage sex to using a white voice in the telemarketing department, Riley's debut film looks like a go-for-broke extravaganza of insane surrealism. And of course, with a cast led by Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Terry Crews, Danny Glover, and Armie Hammer, I am so down for this one. Could be one of the indie sleeper hits of the summer.

Sorry to Bother You opens on July 6.
