Tessa Thompson to star with Chris Hemsworth in Sony's 'Men in Black' reboot

As one of the few recognizable brands owned by Sony Pictures, the studio has been desperately trying to figure out how to get a new Men in Black film off the ground for the past several years. While the Will Smith/Tommy Lee Jones trilogy seemingly finished with 2012's insanely expensive Men in Black 3, there's always room for a reboot or a spin-off. Initially, the plan was to produce a crossover between Men in Black and 21 Jump Street, an idea that was totally rad, clean, and powerful in the opinion of one Jonah Hill. But somewhere along the line, that plan seemingly changed, and there's now a completely different Men in Black project on the horizon. Fate of the Furious and Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray will be at the helm for a new adventure in the MIB universe, with a screenplay courtesy of Iron Man writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum. Chris Hemsworth was recently revealed as the project's star, and earlier today, we finally learned who Thor's co-star will be in the upcoming film. And despite taking place in a different universe, it looks like his partner in alien madness will be a familiar face.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tessa Thompson, star of Thor: Ragnarok and last month's Annihilation, is in talks to join the cast of the still-untitled Men in Black reboot. She'll be Hemsworth's co-lead in the film, where both actors will play new characters in this established universe. The Hollywood Reporter notes that additional details are under wraps, but emphasizes that the picture is something of a global ensemble movie. For Hemsworth, this is likely to be his main franchise after his run as Thor ends and he officially retires from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But for Thompson, a spot as the co-lead in this major reboot is just another project on her growing slate of spectacular titles, which currently includes HBO's Westworld and Creed II. In addition, after her initial appearance as Valkyrie in Ragnarok, Thompson quickly became a fan favorite. She's already spoken about the possibility of an all-female Marvel ensemble movie, and that could quickly become a reality as the studio moves into post-Infinity War plans. I can't say I have any personal connection to the Men in Black franchise, but I really like what Sony has done with the reboot so far. Thompson is a terrific actress, and she's the perfect rising star for this franchise. If the studio can conjure some of that Jumanji magic for this reboot, then I'm all in.

Even though it doesn't have a title, Sony's new Men in Black film is set to debut on June 14, 2019.
