Ava DuVernay in final talks to direct 'The New Gods' for Warner Bros./DC

In the time leading up to its release, A Wrinkle in Time was widely considered to be one of the most hotly-anticipated films of 2018. After turning down Marvel's Black Panther, Selma and 13th director Ava DuVernay was approached with by Disney with an adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's classic novel, becoming the first African-American woman to direct a $100 million blockbuster. But in the aftermath of Wrinkle's debut last weekend, the conversation around the groundbreaking fantasy film has become much more complicated. While most critics agree that DuVernay's latest has good intentions and celebrates diversity on a big scale, the overall reaction to the film has been muted at best and quite unfavorable at worst. The Rotten Tomatoes score stands at a tepid 41%, and I don't think anyone would argue that the reviews had something of an impact on the film's relatively low $33.1 million opening weekend. But as many have noted, one disappointment rarely defines a director's career, and it looks like DuVernay could be taking another big blockbuster swing sooner than we thought.

Earlier today, Deadline exclusively revealed that Ava DuVernay is in talks to direct The New Gods for Warner Bros. and DC. The film is an adaptation of Jack Kirby's fantastical comic book series, which contains a multitude of obscure characters, as well as numerous connections to other famous faces in the DCU. WB and DC have reportedly chosen Kario Salem to write the script, working in coordination with DuVernay throughout the process. The Deadline report notes that DuVernay had previously listed Big Barda as her favorite superhero, who happens to be a member of the New Gods.

If I'm being honest, I'm totally unfamiliar with any of these characters, and I know even less about the very concept of the comic itself. But I decided a long time ago to never write off any of these comic book movies before seeing even a frame of footage- remember when Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad seemed like terrible ideas destined to become flops? Regardless of my feelings on A Wrinkle in Time (my review is coming soon, but I left unimpressed), DuVernay is unquestionably a talented filmmaker as well as a crucial voice for social change in the industry. Even if a strange and unconventional young adult flick wasn't the best fit for her talents, I'm still curious to see what she can do with a big and unique superhero movie.

Earlier today, DuVernay revealed that she'll be filming her Central Park Five miniseries with cinematographer Bradford Young for Netflix sometime this summer. And with so many projects in development at DC, it's unclear when The New Gods will get off the ground. But hopefully we'll hear more about this project in the near future.
