'Wonder Woman,' 'Molly's Game,' and 'The Post' gain Oscar momentum with nominations at 2018 Producers Guild Awards

All of the guild races are compelling in terms of their relationship to the Oscars, but if there's one that has a specific, clear impact on the Best Picture race, it's the Producers Guild Awards. From 2008 to 2015, the winner of the Producers Guild Award for Best Motion Picture ended up winning the Oscar. Only recently has that changed dramatically- The Big Short and La La Land won the PGA in 2016 and 2017, respectively, before ultimately losing in the Best Picture category. With the changing demographics of the Academy, this may be the new normal for the PGA. Nonetheless, it's still one of the most important pit stops on the way to Oscar nominations, and it gives us a pretty good idea of what the Best Picture field may look like. Check out this year's nominees for the Producers Guild Awards below!

Usually there are only 10 nominees in the PGA field, but due to a tie, there's a grand total of 11 this year. But as the Best Picture race narrows, there are really only a few films here that necessarily qualify as snubs. Sean Baker's The Florida Project seemed to have a fairly good shot at one point in time, but by missing the cut here, it's on shaky ground leading up to the nominations. Darkest Hour is this year's big Oscar bait movie, and to be honest, that might be why it's not gaining much momentum. It's far too conventional, and while this is ultimately a play for Gary Oldman, missing out on Best Picture would be bitterly disappointing. I think it's safe to say that Phantom Thread is out of the race entirely after falling short with the PGA, while the Netflix bias/curse continues to be in play with Dee Rees' Mudbound, which seems to be headed for doom on Oscar morning.

As for the films that made the list, there were a few surprises. First off, just because Wonder Woman got a nomination here doesn't mean it's a sure thing at the Oscars- Deadpool was nominated last year before missing out on a Best Picture nod. It's a nice step for the Patty Jenkins-directed superhero epic, but it's no guarantee of Oscar glory. Molly's Game seems destined to be the other Oscar outlier here, and yet the WGA nomination could indicate broad support. Beyond those two films, I have a feeling that these are your Best Picture nominees- I, Tonya and Darkest Hour could do some kind of switch, but I'm confident that we won't see too many more surprises between now and January 23.

The Producers Guild Awards will be announced on January 20.
