Watch: Creepy trailer for Steven Soderbergh's iPhone-shot 'Unsane'

Remember when Steven Soderbergh was going to retire in 2013? Yeah, that never really happened.

Trust me, I'm not complaining. It's just rather funny- in the time since Soderbergh revealed his intentions to call it quits, he has directed a critically-acclaimed heist movie, a 6-part HBO series, and 20 episodes of a prestige drama. That's one hell of a retirement. Soderbergh has always been on the cutting edge of the industry, working at the forefront of the American independent movement of the 1990s before gradually shifting into TV and other mediums. Mosiac, his aforementioned HBO mini-series, is particularly notable for also existing in a unique app format, something that nobody has ever really done before. Soderbergh is pushing boundaries, and his next film, Unsane, will be no different. A horror film shot entirely on an iPhone, similar to Sean Baker's breakout Tangerine, Unsane looks like quite the experiment. Earlier today, the first trailer for Soderbergh's latest hit the web- check it out!

Can you make a Hitchcock film with an iPhone?

That seems to be the question here. And I really don't know the answer yet. Unsane looks suitably chilling, and Soderbergh appears to have crafted something really frightening and gripping with this tale of a woman possibly going mad. The instant comparison is Soderbergh's Side Effects, another Hitchcockian tale of paranoia and suspicion. That was a very solid flick, and I have a feeling that Unsane will be another fine offering. But I must say, I'm not entirely on board with the idea of shooting feature-length films with iPhones. It's a technology that makes sense for aspiring/indie filmmakers, but is it really a logical choice for a director with Soderbergh's level of Hollywood credibility and popularity? While I think there's a case to be made for this format achieving a specific goal (i.e., the final scene of The Florida Project), I don't know how it'll play out in Unsane. However, there's no denying that I'm fascinated to see what Soderbergh has put together. It's an added-value element for the horror film- I'd be there opening weekend just for Soderbergh, but I'm even more curious now that there's an experimental component in play.

With a cast led by Claire Foy, Joshua Leonard, and Jay Pharoah, Unsane will debut on March 23. But first, the film will play at the Berlin Film Festival, which takes place from February 15-25. Look for initial reactions to hit the web sometime around then.
