'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' dominates SAG Awards with 3 wins, including Best Ensemble

I feel like we're in the denial stage of this year's Oscar race. Two clear and unambiguous front-runners have emerged, but people don't particularly seem to feel all that passionate about them. Some fans maintain that both Jordan Peele's Get Out and Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird still have a shot at Best Picture glory, but neither film has won any substantial pre-cursor award that leads to the Oscars. So here we are, with Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water preparing to duke it out over the next month. The latter film, a lavish Cold War-era romance, won Best Picture prizes at both the Producers Guild and the Critics' Choice Awards, putting it in prime position to take the Oscars by storm. The former film, a biting and brutally dark tragicomedy about anger in America, won the Golden Globe for Best Picture- Drama, racking up several nominations at major ceremonies along the way. But going into the SAG Awards tonight, only Three Billboards had the opportunity to gain major ground. And that's exactly what it did. Here are the winners of this year's Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role- Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role- Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role- Allison Janney, I, Tonya

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role- Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Personally, I love Three Billboards. I know many who don't. Personally, I don't much care for The Shape of Water. I know many who adore it. But at this point in the Oscar season, I think we need to come to terms with the fact that these are our front-runners, whether we like it or not. The Oscar nominations on Tuesday morning could tell an entirely different story, but these two films only continue to gain strength. Do I know which one will win? Not in the slightest. The race remains without a single front-runner. But I don't think we can continue to count on Lady Bird, Get Out, or Dunkirk to rescue us from the fate of a ho-hum Oscar season. This is the hand we've been dealt by Hollywood's major voting bodies. Barring a miracle in the next month, it's gonna be Mildred Hayes vs. Fish Man for all the marbles on March 4. Get ready for it.
