Greta Gerwig, Christopher Nolan among nominees for 2018 Directors Guild Awards

"Here are the all-male nominees."

With one brief comment on the Golden Globes stage, Natalie Portman changed the political dynamics of the Best Director race. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association was rightly chastised online for their neglect of great female directors like Greta Gerwig, Patty Jenkins, and Dee Rees in favor of Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott, but Portman's remarks gave the controversy a visibility that it didn't have before. As we move closer to Oscar nominations, you can guarantee that this will be on the minds of voters. And while this is partially about recognizing the inequality in the industry, it's also about awarding brilliant work when it's right in front of your face. There's no denying that Gerwig and Jenkins made superior films this year, especially in comparison to legends like Spielberg and Scott. Yesterday, there was growing concern that the Directors Guild would ignore Gerwig or first-time director Jordan Peele in their nominations, but thankfully, that didn't turn out to be the case. Check out the nominees for this year's Directors Guild Awards!

While my list for Best Director would obviously include directors like Blade Runner 2049's Denis Villeneuve and Call Me By Your Name's Luca Guadagnino, I have to say that this is a very good set of picks by the DGA. All five of these men and women are filmmakers with vision, and their films reflected that. Although I'm evidently not a fan of Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water, I've made my peace with its formidable presence in the Oscar race, and he deserves kudos for being one of the few true originals left in Hollywood. I'm ecstatic to see Christopher Nolan here for Dunkirk, and Greta Gerwig and Jordan Peele crafted two of the most undeniably thrilling directorial debuts of the year. And even though it's more of a writing play than a Best Director winner, Martin McDonagh did some really great work on Three Billboards. If these are the five nominees at the Oscars, I'll be totally fine with that. While many Oscar prognosticators have been quick to note that the DGA's picks and the choices made by the directors branch rarely overlap completely, I'm not sold on the idea of Guadagnino or The Florida Project's Sean Baker making the cut with the Academy. But with nominations just around the corner, it won't be long until we find out.

The Directors Guild Awards will be announced on February 2.
