Get Ready for Nightmares: Horrifying trailer for A24's Sundance sensation 'Hereditary' hits the web

You may or may not have noticed, but I've neglected to write anything about this year's edition of the Sundance Film Festival. I don't usually post much about festivals that I don't attend, but Sundance tends to be the kind of massive event that demands attention nonetheless. But the common consensus among attendees was that this year's festival slate was surprisingly weak, lacking the kind of show-stopping, crowd-pleasing, instant Oscar favorite that has defined the festival in recent years. Especially after the 2017 festival included cinematic phenomenons like Call Me By Your Name, The Big Sick, Mudbound, and Get Out, 2018 just couldn't quite match up. Nonetheless, there were plenty of films that received a positive reception in Park City. I'm totally in the tank for Boots Riley's surreal Sorry to Bother You, and my hopes are high for Bo Burnham's highly acclaimed Eighth Grade. Josephine Decker's Madeline's Madeline also received raves, but the most intriguing film to come out of Sundance might just be Hereditary. Instantly hailed as a masterpiece of indie horror, Ari Aster's film might just become a breakout hit when A24 releases it in the summer. Capitalizing on the buzz from the fest, the studio released the first trailer below- check it out!

After hearing the outrageously good reviews out of Sundance, I probably didn't even need to see a trailer for Hereditary. But this trailer, much like the first teaser for Trey Edward Shults' claustrophobic It Comes at Night, has made Hereditary one of my most anticipated films of the summer. This is an incredibly creepy glimpse at what is supposedly a shockingly terrifying film, so scary that it made even the most seasoned of film critics cower in fear. The sense of visual composition looks profoundly unsettling, and while the trailer obviously has to deliver some big jump scares to get audiences in the door, this is clearly going to be an atmospheric treat. Each frame of this trailer looks genuinely scary, and I love that I still don't entirely know what the film is about. And plus, the cast is great- Toni Collette has been receiving raves, Gabriel Byrne and Alex Wolff are reliable supporting players, and young Milly Shaprio looks to join the ranks of frightening horror movie kids. Nobody in the indie world knows how to market quite like A24, and they've crafted another downright brilliant teaser. Here's hoping this one lives up to the buzz.

Hereditary opens on June 8.
