Terrifying new trailer debuts for Alex Garland's mysterious 'Annihilation'

Paramount has been taking some big risks recently with their releases, distributing films like Darren Aronofsky's mother! and Alexander Payne's upcoming Downsizing. With that release strategy in mind, the studio seemed like the perfect fit for Alex Garland's ambitious and unique Annihilation. But it's getting increasingly difficult for big-budget sci-fi to find a market, which means that these films almost always lose money. Reports came out last week indicating that Annihilation was running into some post-production problems, with a clash emerging between producers Scott Rudin and David Ellison over the nature of the "intellectual" and "complicated" film. Enter Netflix. The streaming giant hands out money like it's nobody's business, and they scooped up the international rights (excluding China) to the film, opting to release it 17 days after its North American debut. That's big news for Hollywood, and according to many reactions, it's something that could happen more and more in the future. With that in mind, here's the second trailer for Annihilation!

Even with the post-production battles and creative clashes, Annihilation is undeniably one of my most anticipated films of 2018. It appears that Scott Rudin (who was fighting for Garland's original vision of the film) has won out, with the Netflix deal symbolizing the fact that the challenging sci-fi adaptation will remain in its original form. I didn't love Ex Machina when I first saw it, but the sheer ambition and intelligence of Garland's film won me over on a second viewing. Garland is not looking for easy answers or cheap thrills, and the science fiction world is better because of this. So while this trailer advertises something that seems frightening in a conventional manner, I have a feeling that the end result will be anything but that. Garland's film looks beautiful and haunting, and when your cast is led by Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Tessa Thompson, can you really go wrong? Plus, I absolutely adore that little musical cue that accompanies the Shimmer. There's something really bold and enticing about Annihilation, and I can't wait to explore this world in just a few short months. Hopefully we'll be able to move past the behind-the-scenes drama to discover a truly special film.

Annihilation debuts in U.S. theaters on February 23.
