Tarantino News: Untitled 1969 Project set for August 2019 release, 'Star Trek' movie reportedly in development

After the bombshell allegations against superstar producer Harvey Weinstein that rocked Hollywood to its core, directorial icon and Weinstein collaborator Quentin Tarantino was forced to come to terms with his role in the scandal. Tarantino expressed regret at not doing more to help the predator's victims over the years, officially abandoning the producer and siding with the women who came out with their stories. While many in Hollywood admitted some knowledge of the mogul's behavior, Tarantino's reckoning was a strangely frank and honest reflection. There was much debate about whether or not Tarantino deserved condemnation for his inaction, but the filmmaker is nonetheless moving forward with his career, lining up his 9th project. After a bidding war between Warner Bros., Paramount, and Sony, the latter studio ended up acquiring Tarantino's next film, which is reportedly an ensemble piece set in 1969.

To nab the film, Sony had to capitulate to a number of Tarantino's demands, including a reported $95 million budget, final cut, 25% of the first dollar gross, and a good deal of creative control. There has been a good deal of debate over what this film is actually about- initial reports indicated that it centered around the Manson Family Murders, but Tarantino himself squashed those rumors, saying "It's not Charles Manson, it's 1969." Later, a report from Vanity Fair revealed that the story is focused on a TV actor hoping to get into the film business, with the murder of Sharon Tate serving as the backdrop for the story. Actors such as Margot Robbie, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Brad Pitt are circling the project, a fascinating mixture of Tarantino favorites and newbies. Last week, it was confirmed by Variety that the film will hit theaters on August 9, 2019, moving Tarantino back into the summer movie season after the winter releases of Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight. The film will hit theaters on the 50th anniversary of the Manson murders, adding another interesting connection to the infamous cult leader, even though Tarantino insists that it's not about him.

But wait! There's more. Apparently, there's another idea brewing in Tarantino's wild brain. Earlier today, Deadline announced that Tarantino has a "great idea" for a Star Trek movie, and that he's currently working with Paramount and J.J. Abrams to get this thing moving. The plan is to form a writer's room to shape Tarantino's idea into a script, and then later down the road, Tarantino would direct and Abrams would produce the eventual film. With Tarantino busy with his 1969 movie and Abrams in pre-production on Star Wars: Episode IX, who knows when this thing will actually get made. But it's an interesting proposition, and certainly an unexpected one.

So what are my thoughts on all of this? Well, Quentin Tarantino is one of my favorite filmmakers, and I am already on board for whatever he wants to do. I'm thrilled to see this 1969 project come together, and I can't wait to see what he does with a massive period piece that feels like a return to his roots. I've read that it's a non-linear, Pulp Fiction-style epic, and I cannot wait to see what he has in store for us. As for the Star Trek film, I'm definitely intrigued- but is it really a Tarantino movie if he's not writing it? While I think it would be incredibly cool to see the filmmaker take on a big franchise, I hope he's able to influence the script as well. Anyways, we'll see where all of this goes. You know I'll be following every update.
