Meet a new web-slinger in the first trailer for 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse'

Spider-Man is still one of the most popular superheroes on the planet, and with both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures making movies featuring the wall-crawler, we're about to see a whole lot of this character over the next few years. Even though I wasn't in love with the film, Spider-Man: Homecoming was a huge success earlier this year, officially establishing Tom Holland as this generation's definitive version of the character after his brief cameo in Captain America: Civil War. Holland will appear as Spider-Man in Avengers: Infinity War and its subsequent sequel, as well as the follow-up to Homecoming, which is officially set for release in July 2019. But if you go back to when Holland was first cast, there was a significant section of the fandom that wanted the character Miles Morales to don the Spidey suit instead of Peter Parker, giving some diversity to the famous comic book character. While those hopes may not have come true in the live-action series, Morales will be appearing in the upcoming Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, an animated movie from producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Just over a year in advance of the film's release, Sony has released a teaser trailer. Check it out!

Since this movie doesn't hit theaters until December 2018, obviously this teaser doesn't give us too much to dissect or analyze. Nonetheless, it gives a brief taste of the look and feel of this project, and that's something that it does very successfully. I know that a lot of people love the animated adaptations of superheroes, but if I'm being totally honest, I haven't seen any of those TV shows or direct-to-DVD movies since I was a kid. My initial interest in this project was due to the presence of Lord and Miller, who are both co-writing the screenplay and producing the film. But after watching the trailer, it's clear that directors Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsay are going for something truly unique here, a fascinating blend of animation styles that almost makes it feel like a comic book come to life. The animation looks genuinely stunning, and it's great to see a different, diverse representation of this character. Sony Pictures Animation is known for their jittery, hyper-kinetic cartoons, and I think that's really the perfect way to go with this character. I'm all in, and I think this will serve as a great appetizer while we wait for Lord and Miller to jump into their next directorial project.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will debut in theaters on December 14, 2018.
