Intense, thrilling trailer for 'Sicario 2: Soldado' is finally here

Does there really need to be a sequel to Sicario? Denis Villeneuve's 2015 thriller about the chilling and terrifying ambiguities of the drug war doesn't exactly seem like the kind of movie that is clamoring for the franchise treatment, but with an $84 million worldwide gross on a $30 million budget, Columbia Pictures and Black Label Media decided it was worth moving forward with a follow-up. Villeneuve and Emily Blunt won't be returning, but Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin are back for round two, with Italian filmmaker Stefano Sollima directing the film. However, this film would barely be worth the attention if it wasn't for Taylor Sheridan, the superstar screenwriter who is returning to pen the script. Sicario was Sheridan's breakout feature, and after the runaway success of the Oscar-nominated Hell or High Water and this year's Wind River, the screenwriter has become a household name. With that in mind, check out the new trailer for Sicario 2: Soldado!

While I was doing the research for this article, I learned through IMDb's trivia section that Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier was originally going to direct this movie before departing for his Netflix feature Hold the Dark. And I gotta say, now I'm a little disappointed. But this is a pretty good trailer, and Sheridan is becoming one of the rare writers who I trust with just about anything. It'll be interesting to see how Soldado plays considering the fact that the villains (Del Toro and Brolin) are now the leads of the story, but I firmly believe that Sheridan will retain the complexity and nuance of the original film. The action looks clean and crisp, and even though cinematographer Roger Deakins isn't behind the camera this time around, Ridley Scott collaborator Dariusz Wolski has seemingly done a pretty great job of capturing the look and feel of the Sicario universe. And of course, then there's the release date to discuss. Soldado is hitting theaters on June 29, a prime summer spot usually reserved for superhero blockbusters and animated movies. It displays an unusual degree of confidence on the part of Sony (the original film hit theaters in September), and Fandango's Erik Davis is already reporting that he's hearing terrific buzz for this film. I would be extremely pleased if this ended up being great, so here's hoping for the best.

With a cast led by Brolin, Del Toro, Isabela Moner, Catherine Keener, Matthew Modine, Jeffrey Donovan, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Sicario 2: Soldado will debut on June 29, 2018.
