Guillermo del Toro's 'The Shape of Water' leads all nominees for 2017 Critics' Choice Awards

As fascinating as the early awards from critical voting bodies in New York and Los Angeles can be, they often have little impact on the Oscar race as a whole. Well, at least this was true in the past. With the changing demographics (younger, more diverse) of the Academy, nobody really knows who has the most influence on their taste. This has been a prominent topic of discussion in 2017, brought up by many successful Oscar prognosticators throughout the course of the awards season. Nonetheless, I think many would agree that the Critics' Choice Awards (chosen by the Broadcast Film Critics Association are still a crucial pre-cursor show, and even though the BFCA votes on an enormous number of categories, I have a feeling that many of the films nominated here will be announced as Oscar nominees come January. So without further delay, check out the list of this year's nominees for the 23rd annual Critics' Choice Awards!

There's a genuinely insane amount of categories here, and it's impossible to glean much concrete information about the future of the Oscar race from this set of nominees. It seems like virtually every film that was well-received in 2017 received at least a few nominations- even movies that got a mixed reception like Wonderstruck and Beauty and the Beast got some attention in minor categories. If you're surprised by the lack of love for Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread (the embargo just broke, and reviews are spectacular), well, it seems like most of the members just haven't seen the movie yet. The stellar 14 nominations for Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water is another welcome boost after a poor showing at the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle, and if it can keep up the momentum, maybe there's enough appreciation to form a consensus. No other film received more than 10 nominations, but Call Me By Your Name, Dunkirk, Lady Bird, and The Post all tied for second-best with eight noms each. If I had to guess, these five films are your Best Picture locks at the moment.

The Big Sick did pretty well across the board, and there was a good deal of adoration for Three Billboards as well. As a huge fan of Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049, I was pleased to see it receive 7 nominations, indicating strong support in technical categories that could translate to Oscar glory. The Critics' Choice Awards are unique in that they hand out trophies for genre-specific categories, which leads to nominations for films like It, Baby Driver, and War for the Planet of the Apes, some of my favorites of the year. It irritates me that there are as many as 7 nominees in some categories, but it feels like all of the nominees here are most certainly finalists for an Oscar nod. Nonetheless, it's nice to see widespread appreciation for so many great films, and this is definitely a terrific set of nominees.

Next up- Golden Globe nominations on Monday.

The winners for this year's Critics' Choice Awards will be revealed on January 11, 2018.
