Fun trailer for 'Ocean's 8' previews a star-studded new team

More than a decade after the conclusion of the Ocean's trilogy, the heist franchise is finally returning to the big screen with a new installment. But this time around, it won't be George Clooney or Brad Pitt leading the team- no, it'll be a group of some of the most famous women on the planet. Gender-swapping the cast of a major film franchise is an increasingly popular move, but it really does seem like a natural fit for the Ocean's series. After all, just like fans were clamoring for a James Bond-esque franchise led by a woman, who in their right mind doesn't want to see Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett pull off a daring and intricate heist at the Met Gala? This is a brilliant concept, one that is primed for maximum blockbuster entertainment. As one of the few summer 2018 releases without a major trailer, yesterday Warner Bros. finally managed to deliver our first look at this new film. Check it out!

It'll be interesting to see how a new Ocean's movie plays without director Steven Soderbergh behind the camera, but by the looks of this trailer, director Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Pleasantville) has expertly channeled the look and feel of the series. Admittedly, I've only seen Ocean's Eleven (I know, I know, there's a lot of movies I should watch), but I really did fall in love with that film, allured by its old-school energy and charming all-star cast. In a landscape where explosions and superheroes have dominated, there's something wonderfully low-key about a series of heist films based on trickery, classic movie stars, and subtle deception. The cast looks terrific, with Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett picking up where George Clooney and Brad Pitt left off as the leaders of the crew. It's a fascinating choice to have this work as a quasi-sequel to the original trilogy, with Bullock playing the (supposedly) late Danny Ocean's sister and Matt Damon confirmed to make a cameo. But in the end, I think it'll successfully bring in the old fans while also welcoming a new generation. The film looks stylish and tremendously entertaining, and it'll be another must-see flick in what's shaping up to be a jam-packed June.

Ocean's 8 will hit theaters on June 8, 2018.
