Another dark fairy tale comes to life in first trailer for Disney's 'The Nutcracker and the Four Realms'

Did you know that Beauty and the Beast is still the highest grossing movie of 2017?

Of course, by the time Star Wars: The Last Jedi is said and done, that will no longer be the case. But you gotta hand it to Disney- when they come up with a formula, they stick with it. As the company increases their market share and diversifies their content, they've found a way to capitalize on old animated properties by turning them into big-budget, live-action fairy tales. They've had much success with the aforementioned Beauty and the Beast, Jon Favreau's hyper-realistic The Jungle Book, and Kenneth Branagh's classical Cinderella, and in the coming years, Disney will be churning out even more animated adaptations. Favreau's The Lion King, Guy Ritchie's Aladdin, Niki Caro's Mulan, Tim Burton's Dumbo- the list goes on and on. But in the midst of all these high-profile properties, somehow The Nutcracker and the Four Realms managed to slip through the cracks. The film went into production rather quietly, and I heard almost nothing about it until some unflattering news broke recently (more on that in a moment). Anyways, even with the film's release date 11 months away, Disney is starting the marketing machine early with a trailer. Watch it below!

"The Legend You Know Has a Dark Side"

Okay, so before we dive into this trailer, it's worth noting that The Hollywood Reporter broke the news last week that The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is about to undergo a "significant shoot of additional photography." And on top of that, the film's original director, Lasse Hallstrom, won't be at the helm for the re-shoots, with Captain America's Joe Johnston directing the shoot. THR noted that Hallstrom is simply unavailable because of scheduling issues, and will still be available for post-production work. Nonetheless, this is a genuinely bizarre occurrence, something that doesn't happen very often and indicates that the movie is not working at the moment. I'm sure we'll hear more as the story develops.

I can't imagine it's hard to make a trailer for a Nutcracker movie- you just play that classic music and let it do the heavy lifting, which is precisely what happens here. It's a good time to release this trailer, as people are most definitely in the holiday spirit with only a few days to go until Christmas. I can't tell if The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is a spectacular production with a lot of lavish, beautiful sets, or if it's another trip into the ghastly Alice in Wonderland well, which is firmly putting me in "wait and see" mode. Also, the tagline I mentioned earlier is almost comically on-the-nose, since every single one of these silly movies seems to tease some kind of "dark side" that never shows up. I really would like this movie to be good, but there's just too much cause for concern at the moment.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms will debut on November 2, 2018.
