Teaser trailer for 'The New Mutants' previews a horrifying chapter in the X-Men saga

Even with all the strange ups and downs that have troubled these films over the years, 20th Century Fox has somehow retrofitted the X-Men series into the most experimental and vibrant franchise in Hollywood. Yeah, X-Men: Apocalypse was a huge disappointment, and my excitement levels for Dark Phoenix could not be any lower. But if you move away from the main series, with all of its convoluted plots and continuity errors, you'll find a series that is boldly going into strange new directions. Deadpool may seem like a safe bet in retrospect, but at the time, the idea of doing a violent, vulgar R-rated cartoon was fairly radical. With Tim Miller's smash hit, Fox was metaphorically dipping its toes into the genre pool and testing the waters. But with Logan, they fully embraced this new strategy. The first superhero movie in years to tell a grim, adult story, the western noir stands as one of the year's best films and one of the best comic book movies ever made. With two R-rated smash hits, here comes Josh Boone's The New Mutants, which will see the X-Men heading into horrific territory. To coincide with Friday the 13th, Fox released the first teaser- check it out below!

I had been hearing for months that Boone was going for much more of a horror vibe with The New Mutants, but even with that in mind, this is an incredibly surprising and intriguing trailer. I like the basic setup, and it doesn't seem like they're going to be taking a light approach to the horror- this looks genuinely nightmarish. It almost appears to be an X-Men movie by way of A Cure for Wellness, and while I wasn't a fan of Gore Verbinski's absurdly bloated and bizarrely funny haunted house movie, I can't deny that the aesthetics were outstanding. So if Boone is going for something akin to that or Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, I'm undoubtedly interested. The main trio of Split's Anya Taylor-Joy, Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams, and Stranger Things' Charlie Heaton is quite impressive, and I like the sense of mystery established by this trailer. I don't exactly know what's going on here, but Boone is definitely aiming for more than your standard superhero movie. The X-Men have always been the most fascinating superheroes from a socio-political standpoint, outcasts with horrifying powers who have been ostracized by society. Logan touched on the sheer brutality of mutant powers, but I think we could see something psychologically and morally complex with The New Mutants. Consider me excited.

The New Mutants will hit theaters on April 13, 2018.
