'Pacific Rim Uprising' teaser trailer reveals an exciting, visually dazzling sequel

Pacific Rim isn't a great movie per say, but it is an exceptionally fun blockbuster. It definitely plays off the Transformers formula, but Guillermo del Toro crafted the film with a level of creativity and innovation that remains impressive. Also, the theme music from Ramin Djawadi is epic on every single level- it has been a staple in my household's film score rotation for several years now. The film was far too expensive to immediately generate a franchise, but the global grosses were strong enough to eventually get a sequel off the ground. While del Toro left to make Crimson Peak and this year's Oscar contender The Shape of Water, he remains on as a producer with rookie Steven S. DeKnight making his way to the director's chair. Bringing back some of the original's supporting players while also existing as a kind of legacyquel, Pacific Rim Uprising could be a fun expansion of an already unique universe. Today, Universal and Legendary Pictures released the first trailer. Check it out!

It feels weird to have nostalgia for a movie that came out less than five years ago, but in blockbuster terms, that's like an eternity. And considering the fact that the film came out towards the tail end of my middle school years, I guess the fond memories are reasonable. Pacific Rim Uprising is in the difficult position of being a sequel to a movie that didn't really warrant a sequel, but the world that del Toro created is so rich and vibrant that I can't resist another trip. I'm glad to see a few returning cast members- Rinko Kikuchi's Mako Mori is listed in the IMDb cast list, and Charlie Day and Burn Gorman's kooky scientists are coming back as well. And I can't think of a better anchor for this film than John Boyega, playing the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost. This is a franchise that desperately needs a face beyond the digitized robots and monsters, and Boyega is one of the most charismatic young actors on the planet. And besides, this movie just looks fun. I love that they throw in a little hint of the score at the start, all before delivering the kind of gleeful carnage that we've come to expect from a franchise based around the idea of robots fighting monsters. Uprising looks like goofy, colorful blast, and I'm more than willing to dive right into this one. Bring on the Jaegers and the Kaiju.

Pacific Rim Uprising will hit theaters on March 23, 2018.
