Wes Anderson is back! Watch the first trailer for 'Isle of Dogs'

Wes Anderson is one of the finest filmmakers working today, and the arrival of a new film from the very distinct, detail-oriented director is always an event. Since the debut of Bottle Rocket in 1996, Anderson has consistently refined his mannered, unique style, bringing us cinephile favorites like The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. But around 2009, Anderson started on a hot streak, and he has done some of his best work in the years since. Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of the most innovative mainstream animated films ever made, Moonrise Kingdom is a lovely and funny ode to young love, and in 2014, Anderson made a genuine masterpiece with The Grand Budapest Hotel. It ultimately felt like the movie Anderson had been working towards for decades, and it has emerged as an endlessly re-watchable favorite of mine. That wonderfully whimsical (and dark) crime comedy became a mini-box office sensation, and it ended up winning 4 Oscars. After a brief hiatus, Anderson will be returning to the realm of stop-motion animation for Isle of Dogs, a film that promises to be one of the most hotly-anticipated titles of 2018. Earlier today, Fox Searchlight released the first trailer- watch it below!

People can make fun of Anderson's quirks and hipster style all they want, but there's no denying that he can build a world like no other. Even after watching just this brief glimpse at his latest film, I feel like I understand the universe he has created so well, and I can't wait to dive in and discover what it has to offer. That feeling of discovery and invention is so rare in modern cinema, which makes the pop auteurs like Anderson, Tarantino, and del Toro so truly important. While it will take quite a follow-up for me to adore this film as much as Grand Budapest, it looks like Isle of Dogs is going to be something truly special. Fantastic Mr. Fox was actually my introduction to Anderson's work, and I was immediately struck by the whip-smart humor and clever visual approach. I'm glad to see him returning to stop-motion animation, and even more excited to see him travel to Japan to tell this story. This looks visually splendid and emotionally rich, the kind of lightly sardonic work that will connect with kids and adults alike. And after a year that has been one of the most dire for animated films in recent memory, it'll be nice to watch such a wondrous display of the medium's capabilities early next year. Anderson has been on a roll, and after four long years, this film cannot come soon enough.

And how incredible is this cast? Isle of Dogs stars Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Koyu Rankin, Liev Schreiber, Bob Balaban, Scarlett Johansson, Kunichi Nomura, Ken Watanabe, Greta Gerwig, Frances McDormand, Courtney B. Vance, Fisher Stevens, Nijiro Murakami, Harvey Keitel, Tilda Swinton, Akira Ito, Akira Takayama, F. Murray Abraham, Yojiro Noda, Mari Natsuki, Yoko Ono, and Frank Wood.

The film will debut on March 23, 2018. It'll definitely be a factor on my most anticipated list for next year.
