Battle for electricity begins in the first trailer for 'The Current War'

Remember the days when Harvey Weinstein was the master of the Oscar game? It seems so long ago. The Weinstein Company label (and previously Miramax) used to be the strongest indicator of prestige in Hollywood, almost guaranteeing that a film would be garnering awards attention. But Weinstein has lost a step in recent years, unable to consistently deliver projects that live up to their lofty expectations. If anything, last week's release of Tulip Fever is indicative of the entire modern Weinstein approach- butcher a film in the editing room, delay it over and over again, and then dump it at a time where it stands no chance of success. That being said, every once in a while Weinstein strikes gold, such as last year's Lion, which was nominated for 6 Oscars and eventually became a moderate box office hit. The big question for 2017- which film will be Weinstein's darling this year? It looks like The Current War is the studio's best chance, seeing that Garth Davis' Mary Magdalene been delayed. The chronicle of Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse's competition over control of the electric current will premiere at TIFF this weekend, and earlier this week, the first trailer hit the web. Watch it below!

The Current War looks absolutely absurd, and I gotta say.......I'm kinda excited? Turning the turn-of-the-century battle for financial dominance over electricity into an action thriller is a ludicrous concept, but it looks surprisingly fun, and in the midst of so many historical biopics drunk on their own sense of self-importance, a borderline comic book movie approach to this story is uniquely appealing. And plus, the cast in this thing is excellent- Benedict Cumberbatch can do arrogance like no other, Michael Shannon is one of the best in the game, Tom Holland has proven to be a dynamic supporting performer, and I love Katherine Waterston in just about anything. And how can you not love the insane reveal of Nicholas Hoult's Nikola Tesla, which seems like it was ripped straight out of a blockbuster? I'm not sure that The Current War is an Oscar contender, but it looks like a profoundly strange movie and I'm so intrigued. Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon last gave us Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, a whimsical teen film that I loved despite widespread hate. I have a feeling that The Current War will be the subject of some cinephile mockery in the coming weeks, but I'm all in on this thing. Hit me with this insane nonsense.

The Current War will debut in limited release on November 24. Here's hoping that it's as weirdly entertaining as it looks.
