Michelle Williams in talks to join the cast of Sony's 'Venom'

Venom is shaping up to be a truly bizarre project, and I just can't figure out what the hell Sony is trying to do with it. We all know that the studio eventually had to partner with Marvel on Spider-Man: Homecoming, which proved to be a successful venture for both studios. However, Sony retains the rights to certain Spider-Man characters, which means that they can make movies about Venom and the Sinister Six and so on. This is complicated stuff that doesn't necessarily make sense, but all we really need to know is that a film centered around Venom is moving forward quickly. Tom Hardy and Zombieland and Gangster Squad director Ruben Fleischer signed on a few months ago, with Rogue One and The Night Of star Riz Ahmed reportedly joining the cast shortly after. As the film inches closer and closer to production, the cast is starting to assemble at a faster pace. And if you thought Hardy starring in this thing was surprising, just wait until you hear today's news.

A variety of outlets reported today that Michelle Williams, who has been nominated for four Oscars during the course of her career, is in talks to play the female lead in Venom. The Hollywood Reporter noted that no additional character details are available at this time. This is kind of an eyebrow-raising casting choice, and I'm struggling to really understand what this movie is supposed to be. Are we looking at a wannabe "prestige" superhero film, in the vein of Logan or what Warner Bros. is reportedly trying to do with their Joker solo project? In that case, why is a director known primarily for kitschy action and violent comedy at the helm? Or, alternatively, is this some kind of grindhouse R-rated action flick that will thrive on blood and gore and fanboy pleasing setpieces? If that's the plan, why are Oscar-caliber actors like Michelle Williams signing up? Throughout her entire career, Williams has shown a resistance to blockbusters, with the major exception of 2013's Oz, The Great and Powerful. If this Venom script is so good that the actress who delivered heartbreaking turns in Manchester by the Sea and Blue Valentine thought it was worth a shot, then I guess we have to pay closer attention to this movie. But for now, it just seems like a lot of conflicting elements that are not adding up.

Venom will be released on October 5, 2018.
